    How many hours does it take to change the Shifter Shaft Seal on a 328?

    Also, how many hours does your typical Major Service take? Including all belts, fluids, filters, gaskets, valve adjustment etc.

    The cars have gotten old enough and had so many hands on them performing bad work that needs to be cleaned up it is impossible to tell accurately. I no longer even try to give estimates with great specificity to cars of that age and even then I don't give any number at all until I see the car. We just have to fix too many unforseen things. Just the trans pan for example. The gasket should come of very easily taking just a few minutes. These days we see so many that have been so aggresively glued it takes an hour to scrape off and then we can start to helicoil all the studs that are pulling out of the aluminum.

    Is your shifter shaft leaking badly?
    I have a very minimal leak on my car and was told that I should really just leave it be....
    Not being a person that is confortable with knowing my car is not perfect, I will likly get it fixed. I wonder if this is a common problem.

    My shifter started leaking within two months of replacement! Guess I'll have to bring it back. Also does anyone know that if they started to leak, does the tranny oil get into the oil pan? If so, there's a good enough reason for you not to wait too long. I'll be changing the tranny oil to Redline this weekend and I'll let you know if there's less than the recommended 4-5 quarts.

    AIN"T THAT THE TRUTH! Besides cars, I repair/restore lots of old things, from pocket watches to motorcycles to grand pianos and boats and the biggest issue almost every time is improper previous repairs/wrong use of liquids/potions. Something that is pretty straightforward becomes a total PITA simply because some previous "technician" used a wrong or poor quality part or used an incorrect adhesive, lubricant, tool (buggering up the fasteners) or whatever. Boats are THE worst...It's like nobody ever heard of correct (and approved) wiring (type/size/routing) when they add equipment.
