I'm a Cubs fan who, like most others, is ecstatic over receiving Nomar. The Boston press has been talking a lot of smack about him, but I get the feeling that a lot of it is small-minded attempts to smear him. I'm generally not a fan of the sporting press, and I guess what I'm looking for are opinions from real Red Sox fans about Nomar. It seems like this was inevitable ever since they began dealing for A-Rod, if not earlier. Did Theo screw up? Or was Nomar jerking the team around?

    Gilles,

Well he call him Nomahhhhh! :) Nomar was a huge fan favorite here. For the 7 years he was here he was a very upscale citizen, he does a lot for charity for children. But in the last year, his 100% committment has been questioned, there were many stories that he was not happy being on the East Coast and wanted to return to CA where he is from. There were may rumors about going to either the Angels or Dodgers.

His contract is up at the end of this year and he was offered a very good contract last year (something like $15M a year for 4 years) He turned it down so the Sox took the offer off the table and numbers like 9-10M were now being mentioned. It became clear to many that he was NOT going to resign with the Sox regardless of the offer so the smartest thing was to trade him for some value and move on.

You guys are getting one of the best infielders in baseball WHEN he is healthy which has been an issue in the last 3 years. He can bat for power and avg too. But I would not hold my breathe that he will be with the Cubs in 2005 unless they offer some HUGE $$$!

From my perspective it isn't really the press that is talking smack, but is really Red Sox team management that is doing all the talking. Everyday since the trade there seems to be some comment from the team on the situation. I'm guessing that Bad Chariot hit it on the head. Nomar has always been a fan favorite, and now the team is trying to justify to the fans why Nomar needed to go.

Had the original offer 4yr/$60 million offer last spring been in the neighborhood of what Nomar was looking for I think he would still be in a Sox uniform. Since management thought it was a great offer that was flatly rejected by Nomar, they came to the belief that trading him was the only option. I think this deal was imminent because Epstein and John Henry botched the trade for ARod. By working so hard to try to make that deal happen, only to have it fall apart, I'm not surprised that Nomar would no longer wish to be part of the organization. Now they just need to shut there mouths, because the more they bad mouth Nomar, the more they look like idiots to the fans.

Hey if Nomar wanted to stay in Boston like he keeps claiming, then why didn't he either accept or counter propose to the 4yr/$60million offer ? If $60mill ain't enough for him then see ya later. But his silence spoke volumes to the Red Sox brass. I believe he will not get anywhere near that kind of offer again. I could be wrong. Personally I think Normar's best days are behind him with age and injuries taking their usual toll on the athelete. His fielding has become very suspect to the point where some baseball writers count him among the worst in the league. It's time to get past this and move on. At least Boston got something this time and it's not like watching Clemens and others walk for nothing in return.

Thanks, guys. I guess that's more or less what I suspected. Once again, the truth lays somewhere in the middle. He refuted that West Coast dream in the local paper today, and the Cubs will have money in their payroll for him next year. Alou will probably be gone, unfortunately, but he's getting on in years. There's a little irony in the deal, because originally the trade rumors meant the Cubs dealing Matt Clement to get Nomar. Now everyone is patting themselves on the back for not having to deal him, but now reality is that in order to re-sign Nomar, there's no way they'll have enough money to pay Clement, who will ultimately be lost to free agency! Po-tay-to. Po-tah-to.

I don't disagree that Nomar should've taken the 4yr/$60M, I just don't think he thought it was enough to keep him there. As for Clemens, my recollection is that he was shoved out the door by Dan Duquette.

From my perspective I say good riddance! Not for any other reason that if I never hear one more drunken fan yelling NOOOOMMMMAAAAAAH under my window at 2AM I'll die a happy man. Either that or I could just jam a pencil in my eye, as they are tantamount to the same thing.

He should have taken that deal, He gambled and lost, The Market seemed to have peaked shortly after that and has started to come down. Now with a potentially career hampering type injury along with a lower market I would bet he will end up sighing for less than that offer.
