does anybody make head units anymore that do buffering of the CD signal to avoid skips and whatnot associated with potholes and dirt roads --- or if you drive a CS, skips associated with a feather some bird left in the road ;) ????

i've been digging around online and am coming up quite empty. it looks like Eclipse (Fujitsu) used to build this into every head unit, but not anymore. it looks like Sanyo makes some units that buffer only MP3 playback off CD - not redbook CD audio. i'm aware that some cd changers have this functionality (sony?), but i'm not interested in a changer.

anybody have any clues on this one?

and spare me the "listen to the engine diatribe" - the engine is lovely, but i like music too.

I'm calling bs on this one. Everybody knows that all Doody listens to are tapes on world domination.

You would better off converting CD to MP3S and getting a nice indash MP3 player...It's a better way to go if you're willing

are you volunteering to come over and rip my 1000 CDs for me?

    :)

thanks, but i'd really prefer to just get a player that buffers redbook CD.

    Doody,

Most modern day CD players simply do not skip... unless you are planning to go off-reading with the Fcar. With proper installation (including a BACKSTRAP) the unit should not skip at all. It is weird no one makes a unit with memory as i recall years ago it was the 'hot button sale pitch.' May i ask why you feel you need such a thing (besides you hate skipping) such as it is for your 4x4 during excursions driving over the White Mountains.

If you want a truly awesome unit, i can HIGHLY recommend the Pioneer AVIC-1 ($2k msrp). Works great in the fcar here, has vehicle dynamics to evaluate your G-forces, a great AM/FM tuner, GPS navigation and INCLUDES USA and Canada maps on DVD, plays MP3/DVD-Video/etc. and you can add (options)XM radio, voice recognition, video camera, wireless remote control, etc.

steven - the becker cd player that comes with the stock CS stereo skips on nearly every bump (in race mode - taking it out of race mode helps a bit, but not materially - it still skips a few times every minute unless you're on full-bore eight-lane highway). and it skips not only 'cuz the suspension is so tight, but even an aggressive upshift will cause the damn thing to skip!

do you think the head unit is broken somehow?

can anyone else with a CS radio comment on their experience?

The nakamichi cd-700ii has the cd player parts isolated from the chasis of the radio. This is supposed to keep it from skipping.

most players have smart ways to isolate the transport, but i would submit that none of the companies have tested their units out in a CS in race mode ;)

i want a unit that ram-buffers the cd data.

The only things that I see with that feature now are MD players. Some of them have 10 second anti-shock.

I remember I had a discman that did that, it was really nice.

When I had the stiff suspension in my Miata my kenwood CD player would skip all the time. A bunch of screws also fell out of the dash too.

Doody, hard to say if the unit is defective, yet i have driven on rough surfaces and not skipped with the Pioneer AVIC-1. Then again the AVIC-1 is a DVD player so the laser/transport mechanism is different and can read larger 'pit area' CDs easily as DVD has a smaller 'pit' to read.

This isn't quite what you are looking for, but I was just looking at a Clarion CD/MP3/WMA player that has a feature called "Music Catcher" where you can record CD tracks in WMA format onto a 128MB memory in the deck. Unfortunately it only records in real time so you'd have to sit there and load it up the first time. I hear you on what you're looking for tho. Tivo for the car.

I have a shedload of CDs myself but I find I am listening to a handful at any given point in time so this might work for me in my MBZ but not sure yet. Plus it isn't as fugly as those awful Alpines...

    Cheers
    Kevin
