The hard drive on my iMac failed and is being replaced. Fortunately, I have a Time Machine backup. When I get the computer back, should I use the restore function or migration assistant to set up the drive? Advantages/disadvantages of either?

    Thanks.

What OS were you running? If Snow Leopard, I'd probably say restore. Anything else, maybe migrating would be the way to go [Having said that, I've never needed to do either, so hopefully someone with experience will chime in.]

Good job on already *having* a backup ;)

    Cheers,
    Ian

    Thanks, Ian

    I do have Snow Leopard.

And I only have a backup because after two hours of refusing to boot up, I did get the computer to start. At that point I learned the magic of Time Machine :)

    Brief follow up:

Restore worked brilliantly. Seriously, the only quirk detected was with iTunes, which auto-loaded an Apple ID I hadn't used since prior to ever purchasing my Mac. After then requesting me to authorize the computer to play my purchased music, it told me I already was authorized. All other files, applications (even megabuck programs like Photoshop) transferred perfectly.

Time Machine is insane. Just sick insane.

Why every other mfg on earth hasn't copied it, is beyond me.

Firstly, congrats to the OP on getting 'er going again.

    +1

I continue to be surprised that nobody has done anything similar for Linux (be it FOSS or commercial) - Sure, you can do complete & incremental backups from the command line, but it's not at all "friendly" - It's the one thing still missing from the standard distro's for some reason...... They include all kinds of useful (and expensive in PC/Mac land) S/W, but nothing for backups. :(

    Cheers,
    Ian
