Checking in from Ny here. Was just wondering how come when ever I see pics or vids of a gathering/meet, 99.9% of the newer cars i.e. ferrari, lambo, AM, SLR, etc, do not have Cal plates but instead have dealer tag or nothing at all. Are the cars rentals? Dealer bringing car out to show potential customers? Always curious about this. Maybe you guys know something we don't here in NY.

As an ex-NewYorker, I'll answer. My experience was that in New York, the only "dealer plates" used were by "dealers" only. Any individual owner in ny running around town without plates would be in constant fear of being thrown in jail and his car impounded. My initial thought upon moving out here was "boy there are sure a lot of dealer cars around here!".

I quickly learned upon buying first CA car that plates take weeks - if not months to obtain from the DMV. (In NY you get them immediately upon registration).

Now the exotics tend to eventually obtain their plates - but keep them off as its harder to identify their car - just in case they happen to be operating slightly and accidently outside the boundaries of the legal limitations.

Now, exactly where in NY are you?

I have several friends still driving their exotics/luxury cars with the plates that came from the dealer. They don't seem to get bothered too often.

I leave the paper plates on. Then the car always looks new, and no one can cry to the cops about breaking the speed limit. In CA, especially nice cars, cops don't worry about the paper plate thing.

Most will assume that the car has been recently purchased when they're seen with dealer plates. No one bothers. Also, many owners have good relationships/friends at the dealership they purchased their vehicle from. Displaying the dealer plates acts as a nice bit advertising to show apreciation.

I always thought it was to keep people from finding out who the owner was or their personal information. It's not too hard to get information if you have a license plate #. They could put in the plate # and there is the owners name and address. I don't really know though.

    Yes they do.
LOL, nice!! Two of the three cars in your picture have CA plates on them and the other one is new, as evidenced by the temp registration, visible in the lower right corner of the windscreen!

    Well done!

The VIN # which is typically visable through the front windshield will offer up the same info.

Many people have their cars just until the plates arrive anyway, then they flip them.

Then there is JJay911 so *I* get pulled over by the cops in Irvine for no plates on an '89 328 lol.

I recently received a no front license plate ticket from CHP. $175 ticket. If my car looked new, I would have never gotten pulled over.

a friend of mine keeps his dealer plates on the rear only so he doesn't have to put a front license plate on. someone else mentioned the same thing - i think that's the main reason for those that have had their 'new' cars for a while.

There was a guy who had his Murci for 2 years and still kept the MSRP sticker on his windshield. How's that for keeping the new car image

    funny.

my friend bought a 360 back 2 years ago and still hasn't put plates on it...just keeps the dealer plate on the back and the registration on the front windshield and that's it....same with his SL500 he bought back in December. to my knowledge he's never gotten a ticket...though many years ago with one of his older cars he did get a fix-it ticket for doing that.

Many people register out of state to save on taxes, registration, and in some cases, because the car may not be CA legal, but easily registered elsewhere.

Im in Queens, NY on the Queens/Nassau border. Thinking of moving out to SoCal. Have visited several times and like it a lot. Just always wondered about that plate thing but now I know. Would never be able to get away with that in NY.

What a tool! Thanks to all those who UNDERSTOOD what I was talking about. It was not rocket science.
