Hello to any and all UK F-chatters! I watch a number of shows on BBC America
(Top Gear, Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares, among others) and have noticed that
in many UK towns and villages, I often see 'zig zag' street lines. On Ramsey's
show, he's often outside a restaurant in a small town and on one episode I
just watched, not only is the center line a zig zag, but so are the side marker
lines. Another example is the famous Abbey Road Beatles album cover - where
they're crossing the street, you can plainly see zig zag road lines.

What is that all about? Stylistic? Or do they serve a traffic purpose of some sort?

    Thanks!

Zebra and pelican crossings' zig-zag lines. Vehicles must not overtake, wait or park in the zig-zag areas. Pedestrians should not cross zig-zag areas. They should always use the crossing.

In addition if caught stopping on a zig-zag you will receive 3 penalty points on your driving licence.

You mean like the one in Swindon? - 5 roundabouts in one!:

Here in my town we have over 20 of the things - NONE of which
make any sense where they put them. Our town manager went to
the UK and 'fell in love with them' so we've spent MILLIONS of
tax dollars here in University Place (WA - near Tacoma) putting
them bloody EVERYWHERE - all they do here is take a perfectly
good straight road and muck it all up, just so that one tiny side
street with almost no traffic doesn't have a stop sign. Ridiculous.
