I just got a new laptop at work. I've been managing my iPod through my old laptop, which is now gone. Before I got the new computer, I moved my iTunes to a server so I could load it 'full' onto the new laptop.

From iTunes, I manage both my Nano and my Motorola SLVR. Today, I plugged in the SLVR and iTunes recongnized it, but it won't let me 'write' to it because it says 'the disk is locked and can't be written to'. I haven't tried the Nano yet, but may get the same problem.

So, the question is, how do I 'unlock' the SLVR so I can write to it? iTunes online help isn't.

Did you do an "authorize this computer" under the advance tab?

Also, when you did the backup, did you follow the backup itunes proceedure or did you do a simple copy?

Did you copy all the files and not just the music?

Also, did you do a "deauthorize this computer" before you got ride of your old laptop?

I moved the iTunes s/w and all the music files to the server, then just pulled them to the new laptop. When I started iTunes on the new box, I never had to 'authorize' it that I recall. When I look on the 'advance' tab now, it only shows 'deauthorize'.

It should like you did a flat file copy and not a reinstall of iTunes.

The copyright protection on iTunes is a bear and flat file copies will not work and since you did not have the option to "authorize" your computer, it still things that instance of iTunes is on your old PC and throwing SID errors.

I think you may be out of luck. iTunes has a specific proceedure to move from one pc to another.
