I typically sip Cognac or Scotch. The last bottle of Scotch I had was a Glenmorangie 10 year, and so far that was the best I've had. I want your advice on the best you've had $50 or less. I am interesting in trying something new for my late nights of homework.

    Thanks,
    Chris

    Glen Goyne.

    unpeated scotch. VERY smooth flavor.

    http://www.glengoyne.com/

I recommend the 17 year old.

Although the 10 and 12 arent bad at all.

the 21 year old takes on a little bit of a harsher flavor... at least the batch that i tasted did. Could have just been one cask though.

will have to try more of the 21 year old to be sure ;D

I think the Macallan 12 has been pretty decent so far.

It's a few buck over $50, but The Balvenie Port Wood 21 year old is very good.

For a relatively inexpensive single, I've always liked the Dalwhinny as well. The oban is always pleasant, and Macallan remains a staple for me - especially when you can find deals on it from time to time. Seems to be the most regularly 'discounted' (ha!) single malt in many of the stores down here.

I like Macallan 12yo, I hate the fact that the actual name is "The Macallan". It sounds so pretentious and awkward.

"I'll have The Macallan with a chaser of The Pabst Blue Ribbon."

"I love scotch. Scotchy, scotch, scotch. Here it goes down, down into my belly... " Ron B.

I think that johnny walker black - not even a single - is pretty good for the day to day drinking.

I treated myself and some mates to the blue bottle once - also a blend. that was absolutely fantastic. So smooth. unbelievably smooth.

as far as singles go, i've always been fond of glen rothes.

    Cheers!

Macallan and Highland Park are my 2 regulars. Hate Glenfiddich and the Isle of Islay peat moss stuff.

My wife bought me a 10cl bottle of this (The 10cl size meets the cost criteria of this thread, barely.) Smoooooooooooth. V-12 smooth. Un-f-in-believeably smooth. Very very very very good stuff.

For a completely different taste, I like Lagavulin, but it has shot up in price the last couple of years and can no longer be snagged for $50.

Does is cost everyone else an extra $50-$100 every time you go through Heathrow as well?

That's not a cost, that's an INVESTMENT in personal mental health. Like a drive in your Ferrari that raises your spirits and clears your head of all of the BS that bothers you, a wee dram (or more) of a good scotch in the evening does wonders to restore a healthy outlook to your life. Much cheaper and more fun than a shrink!

    Absolutely.

I spent labor day weekend backpacking in the Sierras.

Clear starry nights, sitting around the campfire, sipping Laphroig and Balvenie.

It don't get better than that.

ps the Makers Mark went down smoothly as well. :) but that is another thread.

does anyone else get seasonal with their liquor? scotch is a cold weather drink to me, whereas I tend to drink more gin and vodka in the summer

What is this season you speak of?

Seriously, Summer is a time for Blue Sapphire and tonics, margaritas or sipping tequila. But that does not mean I never touch Bourbon or Scotch during the summer.

My staples are Bowmore, Laphroig, and Macallan. I vacationed on Islay as a kid, so my heart is there.

    Jura is nasty.

For a treat, I love the Lagavulin too.

Yep, G&Ts mostly in the summer, but a good Scotch is good any time!
