I was telling a work mate of mine about this documentary on 70's era F1 and I told him the story of how it opens to a track official being split in half by an F1 car. Do any of you remember the name of it? I recall it being a Speed channel once or twice. It was actually very good a part from the brutality.

Might have been the review of the 1973 season in which Francois Cevert died. It had some gloomy title like "The Quick and the Dead".

The incident you're referring to sounds like the track marshall that got killed when running to the aid of a burning F1 car (plus driver). He crossed the track and was hit by another F1 car.

Speaking of being hit, does anyone remember the race in 95 or 97 when the Japanese driver jumped out of his burning car, and was hit by the ambulance? I watched that race but can't remember which race it was...

I'm pretty sure you're talking about "The Quick and the Dead", but the track worker wasn't split in half, or anything like it. He was tossed into the air like a rag doll, and both he and the driver (Tom Pryce) were killed in the accident. Pryce was hit in the head with the corner worker's fire extinguisher bottle and died instantly, although his car continued down the straight until it crashed at the next corner.

I know it was the 1977 race in Kyalami, S.A. when Tom Pryce was killed by the splitee's fire extinguisher. Not certain what the name of the video is though.

"Champions Forever: The Quick and the Dead"

I remember seeing that race recently on Speed Channel's F1 decade, so it had to be in '95. Now I can't remember which track.

I think that was Taki Inoue at the Hungarian Grand Prix.....I recall him being an Arrows / Footwork driver......
I remember watching that, and not being sure wether to feel bad or to laugh....it looked really odd, as the course car was not moving that fast, and was pulling up to the stricken car, as Taki was running back to it after snagging a fire extinguisher from the marshall's post.

a strange incident ot say the least....I do know he was not injured...

Thanks hps - I wish someone would post that as an .mpeg on the net... would be a great OWN3D clip.

    I found this on www.f1rejects.com :
A pay-driver pure and simple, the much maligned Taki had an adventurous GP career - his F1 stint included being flipped over by the safety car at Monaco, and being infamously run over by the marshals' car in Hungary.

Was it last year, I think Heidfeld, hit one of his own Jordan mechanics?

Not last year, he was with Jordan Ford last year along with Timo Glock and Giorgio Pantano, who wasn't very good.

Not too sure if we're talking about the same event here but I remember seeing footage of the start of a 70's race where a car stalled on the grid as the lights turned green. A track marshall foolishly ran onto the track to push the stricken car. The stricken car was struck from behind by a fast accelerating car crushing the marshall. It's all before my time so I don't know what race or the year.

Charan: That was the Belgian GP at Zolder in 1981. Patrese's Arrows stalled on the starting grid, and his mechanic, Dave Luckett, jumped over the wall to try to start the car. While he was crouched under the rear wing hooking up the starter, the green lights came on! Patrese's team mate Sigfried Stohr slammed into the back of Patrese's car, scrunching Luckett. It was very, very scary to see, but Luckett survived without life-threatening injuries. Another mechanic was killed the same weekend when hit by a car in the pits.
