In my search for a 1990 -1992 348 ts, I’ve come across a couple examples of these low mileage driven cars since the last complete major service was done. Here’s one example: 1991 348 ts. The car had a “complete” 30K major (engine out) service from a reputable garage in 2003 with 15K miles. Car now has 15,800 miles (2006) and is being offer for sale.

My concern is “very limited” driving. The car has only 800 miles since the major was competed in 2003. 800 miles in 3 years. I’m a firm believer that these cars need to be driven or seals, gaskets, etc. begin to dry up, which could cause potential issues (and expenses) down the road. However, I also understand that these cars are secondary vehicles and are usually driven on weekends or get limited driving time, etc.

    I have two questions:
    1) Is this low mileage since the last major service a legitimate concern?
    2) Using a timing belt change scenario of every 4/30K (and assuming I put an additional 3K on the car) is a timing belt change really necessary in 2007?

    Feedback please….

    Thanks!
    Frank

    hello,

i'm not the one to answer this directly, as i've only owned porsches. but i've had the timing belts replaced in the spring of every fifth year (coming out of winter storage) regardless of mileage. i sleep better at night knowing they have been changed every 60th month.

    you will too.

    regards,

    joseph

    Not this again.........
Buy the car and drive the wheels off it. Get your money's worth out of the cam belt before next major service! :p
    Good luck with it. :)

I have had my 348 for 16 years. I have gone through 3 majors.......2 that I did myself....and each time the belt looked and felt brand new!! I drive my car, so it really doesn't sit.

My advice.........buy it and drive it........but most of all.........enjoy it and be safe~Ciao......Dino

Well 800 miles in three years isn't much.

I say yank the engine and replace the belt only. Then drive to your heart's content.

If you do the job yourself it'll cost you a couple hundered bucks, and a weekend.

Hey if this makes you feel better...the 1990 348 I just bought had NEVER had a major service and it had 23K miles on it. To help you with the math, thats 16 YEARS. Of course I had the service done, but the rollers, bearings, belt, and water pump still looked great!

This every 3,4,5 years business is pure bunk. Every 10 is fine unless you drive the car like a F1 car or something. To heck with what the owners manual says - it's not like Ferrari doesn't have a little conflict-of-interest printing that stuff.

Reminds me of my first Mercedes. When I bought it, they said "bring that in EVERY 3K miles for an oil change." Of course, that's when it was MY responsibility to pay for it.

NOW...Mercedes offers "complimentary service" for the first 3 or 4 years you own the car. GUESS WHAT, now MB says you can go up to 15K MILES between oil changes! How convenient! And you can't bring the car in until the "service" light comes on!

Now who is kidding who here?

Funny how all of that recommended service B.S. changes based upon whose dime is going to be paying for it. If it was on Ferrari's dime, you would NEVER have to service the thing.
