    This is my first post and I'd like to thank everyone out there that has contributed so much to this forum and the wealth of information. Based on all the posts, I decided to pull the engine on my '95 355 to change the timing belts and tensioners and some other minor work (probably not the smartest move I've ever made...). I joked with the mechanic who evacuated the AC that he can guage my success by when the car comes back to get refilled. I'm trying to take enough pictures to create a thread for engine removal with pictures attached. FYI, my 355 has 9k miles and no records indicating any major service to date.

    My current issue is that I can not loosen the large oil cooler line in the picture below. It seems like it would be best to detach the line at the cooler versus on the block but I can not loosen the large compression nut (maybe 44mm) from the silver (possibly aluminum) nut. In the process, the silver nut easily became loose from the cooler itself. Any suggestions?!? Thanks in advance.

    that's quite a first post, most new posters ask about how to finance it or if they can change belts every 10 yrs or so! :D You'll be glad you're doing the major, when you're done you'll know a ton about the car. Mine is still in progress for many reasons not related to the car...

    As for the oil line, that is one tough nut to crack. I ended up using a pipe wrench on the thing. Plan B is to leave it and take the oil sump out with the engine, I've seen others do it that way. Keep sharing your experience...

    I assume that you are using two spanners? One holding the large nut its self and one holding the alloy one? This is to stop you from putting to much force on the tank and risking tearing out the alloy nut from the tank.
    If this is not working, UConn Husky is correct that the tank can be removed with the engine and sub frame. Its held onto the car at the very top of the tank via a single 10mm bolt. This can be accessed via the wheel arch. Then the tank will simply drop out with the engine. There is also an other 10mm bolt at the bottom that hold it onto the sub frame. this can be left in until the whole unit is removed.

    Thanks for the quick replies. Yes, I am using two wrenches as to not damage the sump. Boy that's a tight fit for a pipe wrench! I like the idea of removing the sump, especially since there's only one bolt that has to be removed!
