    All,

I just installed new supports on my engine cover, but, apparently the 355 hood is heavier than the 348 hood. In other words, not only do they NOT open the hood, they also don't hold it up....... Does any one know if the shocks/supports for the 355 are different than the ones for the 348? More importantly, do they mount the same way, in the same place, as the 348 shocks/supports? Additionally, are there, well, generic supports for the 355 that will mount the same way, but won't cost as much? The reason I ask is because at the Ferrari dealer here, they are charging $158 EACH for the supports.

    Daniel??? Any One? Any thoughts?

The Sachs part number for the 355/348 engine lid and front hood struts is SG437007. rockauto.com has them at $26.79 each...plus $4.01 each for shipping. - thanks, DaveHanda

I still have the old Stabillis 348 hood strut, so I took it to the Audi spare shop again and bought another one. Both ball joint ends including the shaft are chrome while the original are black. The body Cylinder is black. The make is "TRIDON" and the part number is 4B5 827 552D for the rear bonnet of the Audi A6 (C5) . It cost me another $33. Be warned that it is slightly fatter than OEM 348 and extra strong even with just one. If you change both, you might bend the bonnet trying to close it! Even with just one on the rear, I have to put a hand on the cover before I pull the level as it will spring up. - thanks, William Heung

Thanks ND.... so, do the 348 and 355 hoods weigh the same? If so, can you think of why the new original struts won't hold the 355 hood up?

The 348 and 355 engine bonnet lids don't weigh exactly the same, but that wouldn't account for the new struts not holding them up. You probably just got a bad batch of struts. Happens.

The original struts on my car had 400 Newton "push power".
I recently bought new ones with the same marking and if it is warm outside they open up the hood, but if it is cold they wont open up but keep the hood open if you help them on the way.
