The (highly likely, original) kit from my '84 looks exactly like this. The only oddity of my kit that has made me "wonder about it" is the fact that the open/box 14mm is labeled a little differently than the other spanners; appears to be of the same source of manufacture, but the text that is cast into it is different. I've always presumed that the different text indicates that it is an open/box wrench, but on the other hand, that would seem pretty clear, even without the different labeling... Cheers, Alex
...my kit looks the same... My SN is 49457. These guys came right down the line together... Cheers, Alex
I think you may be right, but I still wonder why the factory did it that way? Wow! I think my car was right behind you in the production line as they are all ending with odd numbers. I think the previous post was right, they didn't start using the Blue handle pliers until 5xxxx S/N. By the way did you register yours to "308 QV Register yet? http://www.308qvregister.com/
Looks like I was right with my theory that only 1984 308 QV's with chassis # beginning with 5....got the blue handled pliers as part of the toolkit! TRutlands is currently parting out chassis #52267. They have the toolkit from it for sale on Fleabay and the pliers are the blue handled ones. Based on all the evidence here I think we can safely say if you have a 1984 model 308QV and its chassis # begins with a 5....then for 100% originality/concours, the pliers must be the blue handled ones! Wonder if this will make the pliers with the blue handles worth stupid $ now-LOL! P
I too have wondered about my 14 mm wrench as it is different from all the other wrenches in the kit. Jeff Image Unavailable, Please Login
So it looks like the plier handles may not have been the only thing that changed. My 14mm looks much the same as yours, but the rest of the wrenches don't have any sort of "Ferrari" markings on them. In fact, unless you bothered to read the lettering cast into the wrenches, they all look pretty much the same. If you look closely at the picture of miketuason's kit, you can see the casting pattern on the largest wrench is very similar to the pattern on your 14mm. Now folks can start wondering about when the wrench type changed... -- Alex
My guess is that if we had the lettering translated, it might turn out to just say the type of wrench it is. Also, I agree that the cars must have been right next to each other; production is odd numbering, and competition is even numbering. I know that the registry exists, but don't think I ever put my car in. Have never been clear on why I would want to... -- Alex
In my 1984(September built) 308QV gts chassis#52763 the wrenches(we call em spanners in Oz!)are all marked Ferrari except the 14mm which is exactly the same as the one you have pictured! I worked out that the "end" of the wrench fit's perfectly on the end of the spark plug key/tool that is part of the toolkit and I think this is what Ferrari intended it to be for! Why it has different markings from the others in the toolkit I don't know?Maybe it was a case of using leftover parts??? The wrenches in 2vi and early QV'S were all marked UTEMA I think?? Interestingly when the 328's came out the wrenches in that models toolkit aren't marked Ferrari as far as I know!! P
