Questions About Buying a Car in Switzerland & Exporting to the US

    Dear All –

    I am interested in a car that currently has a Swiss registration. It would be sold through a commercial intermediary but the current owner and title holder is a private individual.

    I am lead to believe that this would be treated as a private car sale, and further, such sales in the secondary market are not subject to VAT – is this correct?

    Additionally, the vehicle would be exported to the US, and eventually homologated and registered there (which I know is a cumbersome process). However, given the high cost of both Sea and Air Freight, I may want to retain the vehicle in Switzerland for up to 6 months before I seek to export it out. Are there any issues from a tax standpoint if I seek to retain the vehicle in Switzerland for this period of time in a storage facility.
