I have recently been diagnosed with diverticulosis. Nothing major, just need to increase fiber in my diet. I have started eating "Fiber One" bars, which contain 35% of daily fiber requirements. I am eating 3 per day to get a full day's supply of fiber. I eat 2 for breakfast, and then 1 mid-afternoon as a snack. Problem is that it makes me incredibly gassy! It is supposed to regulate going to the bathroom, yet I can't say it is doing that. I think I need to go, but it ends up just being gas. Often, my stomach feels bloated and sore. I have been doing this for about a week now.

Does one's body start to adjust to the increased fiber intake over time? Are there better ways to take in fiber that don't cause so much gas? Help, as my wife is about to kick me out of our bedroom!

Yes, your body will adjust. Also try eating a substantial lettuce/tomato salad per day. In addition, drink lots of water.

Also increase your fruit and vegetable intake a day.

Be lucky you didn't have this:

I was born with this condition apparently, by the time I was 2.5 or 3 y/o I had gange green of my small intestine and had 3 feet removed. From what my parents said, I was very very sick and almost died from it.

Next time you have 2 days off.

    Morning 1: eat an apple.

Next time after that you have 2 days off:

    Morning 1: eat an apple.
    Morning 2: eat an apple.

    Dan.......

Throw the Fiber 1 bars in the garbage right now. Most of those supplement products are just that.......your body does not metabolise them properly, they are made with low grade materials, packed with sugar in many cases and cost waaaaaay too much. If you've got gas, you're eating to much of the ****.

Eat a serving of yogurt in the morning, with you adding a 1/4 cup of FLAX seed (buy it in bulk for pennies).......right there is 12 grams of natural and healthy fiber (50% of your daily needs) to start with, as well as all the OMEGA 3 than you need for the day.......then during the rest of the next 24 hours just make sure you havhigh fiber components as a side with your meals.......stuff like green veggies, whole grains, brown rice, beans, etc.

Good advice--but GRIND the flaxseed. Very little is taken in from the whole seeds.

I found Ground Flax Seed Flaxseed Meal bulk 5 lb. bag for about $23. Does this sound about right?

Is there any difference between Golden ground and regular ground?

As far as I or my parents know. We tend to believe this is partly why I had an incrediblely tough time gaining weight growing up. Albeit, high metabolism does run in my family.

Just recently I began thinking about having my stomach scanned just to see if there are any issues and everything is okay. I may do that when I hit 30.

I hope everything continues to work out for you. Unfortunately I cannot answer your most recent question. However, I did come across this:

    Hope it helps.

early on this year, I ate the fibre bars too. Same result. Now I eat numerous foods with high fiber... 12 grain bread, oatmeal, yogurt... Not gassy like that at all.

    Dan......

That price is roughly similar to what I pay here in Calgary........now do the math on what those Fiber 1 bars cost per day, and compare a 1/4 cup of Flax seed per day.......it must be something like 10 X 1 in favor of the Flax seed being cheaper, not even taking into account the improved nutritional benefits.

Good luck......hope it works for you.......

Yes +100 on the green veggies and fruits. You need roughage for your stomach and intestines to go to work on. When you shove fiber in there, your digestive system is stimulated to break it down and produces lots of digestive enzymes. If there is no bulky stuff to break down, it leads to gas. So give it lots of green leaves and other healthy things like carrots, cucumbers, etc., to break down. Just fiber by itself will give you a ton of gas. Also, look for double fiber whole wheat bread and buns.

There are also pills you can take to avoid embarrassing moments during meetings, until your body gets used to the new diet. Usually takes 2-4 weeks.

I used to eat about a pound of small carrots a day (5lb bag from Costco). That pretty much did the job.

I started adding 5 table spoons of flaxseed to a packet of fiber-enriched oatmeal every morning. According to the labels, this constitutes 80% of my daily fiber needs. For the rest, I go to whole grain bread and pasta, broccoli and other vegetables, fruits, etc.

I will say that flaxseed adds nothing to it in terms of taste! It is better, gas-wise, for sure. My stomach is in no uproar anymore, except when I eat my wife's chili, like I did the other night!

I think you found your solution. I do pretty much the same thing although I buy a multigrain oatmeal that already has flaxseed in it. You can mix it up a bit by adding dried fruit/nuts or dates to the oatmeal.

Agreed. The Fiber 1 bars taste good but are terrible for you, everybody I know who eats them complains about gas.

Plain wrap Metamucil at Walmart. I like the orange flavor. Big table spoon in a big glass of water twice a day to start. Than once a day for maintinence.

One more thing, When you feel the urge to go, Always go, Dont wait.

Youll be running like a race horse in no time.
