Question for all the wild-eyed-maniacal-gun-loonies on here...and I know that's a lot of folks.

I have a nice, big fireproof gun vault with a tube heater in the bottom (for de-humidification).

Often, it goes a year without being opened.

When I stored all the guns, I cleaned them well, oiled lightly the parts that required real oil and wiped everything down with silicone as I have done for many years. The better long guns are stored muzzle down to prevent oil from pooling/tracking into the walnut stocks. Lessed long guns are stored muzzle up in traditional manner.

Question is: how often would you re-oil or re-silicone guns that are kept untouched in that environment?

I don't break them down to reoil them unless I've shot them. I have some oil wipes I use occassionally to wipe prints off. Other than that you are fine, I think.

If there's no moisture you should be good indefinitely.

    Certainly a few years.

As others have said, I wouldn't feel compelled to do any additional oiling. I'd visually check them over on my annual pilgrimage to the safe to ensure that all was well, though.

Now for my question: why are such fine pieces being ignored? :)

If the dehumidifier works, no need for more oil.

What would you consider "low" humidity?

I've had a hygrometer in there and it tends to run ~40% (general house ~50%)

I do know the wood work in my house starts shrinking when it gets less than 40% so I'm not too keen on getting too much lower.

More importantly, if you have a gun safe that remains unopened for a year or more at a time, you should turn in your Mancard, pack up all the guns and send them down to me! :D:D:D:D:D
