As stated, I bought 04254 recently. Spent a couple days with her in CA and after a month or so, I was planning on sending it to Braden in NJ. Any other recommendations of people to consider are appreciated.

She has rust in the rear and both rocker panels. There was a thread about the car here http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=275616 some time ago. Here are some pics from a website I found from before I bought the car http://www.carpictures.com/Ferrari/Dino-246-GTS-Sebring-Edition-1972-10CHD195602198.

    I'm wondering a couple things:

    1) what is glaringly wrong with the car (I know the headlight covers and engine paint)?

    2) Sebring edition? Mongo at Blackhorse in LA is the source of this rumor. Anyone know anything of it? Supposedly its daytonas and campy wheels, no flares. Doesn't make sense to me.

    3) My brother in-law has already renamed it the Tasmanian devil since she sounds mean on the gas and spits/barks when you let off. Normal?

    4) Shifting, eh. Gearbox was supposedly rebuilt last year, but sometimes I have to really throw it into 2nd or especially 3rd. Once or twice I thought I had it in 3rd but it wasn't in all the way and popped out. To be clear, the shift lever wasn't all the way in place. And one time I down shifted from 3-2 and got buzzed.

Those are my main concerns right now as I get to learn the car and prepare to have everything fixed. The biggest thing I'm planning on doing is stripping the car, repairing all rust and repainting. I do have a leaking cam seal or head gasket seal...need to check and see which one it was that I was told about.

    Thank you!

    3) Either ignition settings or carb float issues. Mine did that until carb float adjustments...now it runs wonderful w/o any `back-talk' when decelerating.

    4) 2nd gear is notorious when gearbox is cold, other gears less so. Wait to use it until Oil Temp gauge is actually reading something. Then gradually ease into that gear...no forcing it or it'll be Captain Crunch.

Change the gear oil to Swepco 201 or Redline 75-90NS and see if that helps the gearbox - these two oils stand far above others on the market as they work so well in the Dino Transaxle.

I would think long and hard about the rust issue, it is a slippery and expensive slope. Dinos never had any paint or metal preserve on their interior side of their body panels so any given original Dino either has rust or will.

    Drew.

    Some questions back at you.

    1. Do you want a concours correct car or driver?
    2. Budget? $10K, $100K, somewhere in between? A real number will help in directing you.
    3. Not scared to truck it out of town, obviously, but how far will you ship?
    4. Preference of Ferrari authorized dealer or not, qualifications of mechanic important, etc?

    5. How much time are you willing to have the car out on this project?
    6. I see Bradan in your post. Are you really prepared to handle a long distance relationship with your mechanic/restorer on this job?

Ok, that's enough for me to know what to recommend. Fill in the blanks and I'll respond appropriately. :D

Had a 72 246 from 73 to approx. 83. Put approx. 45,000 miles on it. Totally redid it in the late 70's. It was a lot of fun, but expensive. Dino's, Daytonas had lot of rust problems related to how they were built. Second gear syncros a problem from day one, so advise given to you regarding warming the car before shifting into second is important. It is a beautiful Ferrari, one that I will always remember. Good luck with the project.

    I have just finished a 5 yr. restoration on a 356 C.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. Here are the answers to the best of my ability
    Looking for a good-great driver
I've got a budget around $30k because its the number the dart hit when I threw it at the wall.
Well, I'd like to keep it in the states. I like Braden's attitude and the fact that its all in house. I also feel comfortable with them since they photograph every step.
I haven't had too much luck with authorized in the past. They're hit or miss in my book.
6hrs. But I can be flexible up to maybe 3 months.
I wouldn't prefer it, but am open to it. They're open to having me source parts, photograph the entire thing, and I really like Dan's attitude and approach.

Drew: Re. your initial question #2, back in the day some folks erroneously referred to GTSs with chairs and flares as "Sebring Spyders", but: (1) I know of no real basis for the implication that the flares/wide wheels were motivated by an intention to homologate the cars for racing; and (2) as everyone knows by now, the Daytona seats (chairs) were in fact a separate option from the flares/wide Campy wheels. Besides, coupes were also available with flares/wide wheels- there just weren't very many of them made.

I didn't think it was a real designation and it definitely didn't push me toward the car. Just wanted some clarification.

Once again, the Dino Register has the answer.
    http://www.dinoregister.com/production.php
The term has been around for decades, heard it many times before.

    As reported by Denny Schue:
"Ferrari enthusiasts refer to the options by various names, "Daytona package" being the most popular. "Sebring spyders" and "Chairs and flares" are also used in the USA. The British refer to them as Dinos with big arches"
