I need to replace one of the ignition coils on the GT4. I see that there is at least one resistor under it (one under the rear coil I saw in a parts book referred to as an "amplifier"). The resistor looks pretty corroded.

    SO...

    a) Should I swap to a different coil that doesn't use a resistor and bypass everthing (resistor/amplifier) mounted under the coil...if so what do y'all recommend as a good fit?

    b) If I should go with a direct fit replacement, does anyone have a cross-reference replacement part number? I don't feel the need to pay $135 for a true Ferrari OEM coil. Then, I suppose, I'll just get a replacement stock resistor from GT Car Parts.

    Thanks !

Hello fellow GT4 owner. IMHO - I haven't heard too many gripes about 308 coils, and if you're sure you've got a bad one, I'd go the 135 to get an original part. Relatively speaking, that's not terrible, and it should last you another 30+ years.

Bosch red coil from Victoria British, $35 as I recall.

You may want to go to the cross reference thread and do a search on "Coil"

+1 for the Bosch 'Red' coils. They are fantastic and slip right in place of where the old coil used to be. Use the original resistor etc. Although I believe Victoria British no longer stocks/sells these coils. Might want to call and check.

I thought the Red coils didn't use an external resistor? So you're using the Red coil with the resistor and it works great?

Maybe it's the Blue one that I read should never be used with an external resistor???

(And as an owner of multiple British cars over the last ten years -- 6 Triumphs, an MGB, Sunbeam...I'm very familiar with Vicky Brit!)

I just looked in my Vicky Brit catalog, they still have Red and Blue Coils for $40 each. The Blue doesn't use an external resistor, the Red does.

The Red is designed for a 1.4 to 1.8 ohm Ballast Resistor -- I haven't looked at the Ferrari shop manual, but does anyone know if the GT4's is 1.4-1.8 ohm?

I suppose I could just buy two new coils and two new ballast resistors from Vicky Brit and call it a day?

The Bosch blue coil has an internal resistor and would require you to delete the resistors and fiddle with the wiring to set it up correctly. The blue coil also has less punch than the red coil. I installed my red coil about a year and a half ago with the stock resistors and there was an immediate difference once the engine was started. Just slip out the old coil and insert the new one. My points have not burned and the car runs very well.
