I just got a Battery Tender to keep my car drivable throughout the winter. I've got it connected via the ciggy lighter for ease of use. Although the manual says to keep the charger portion "well ventilated", I've got it *inside* the car on the passenger floor and the car is covered. The cable is dangling out a partially open window. Anyone see a problem with that setup?

    TIA

Is this the waterproof or Jr.? If so, then I wouln't worry. If it's the more powerful battery tender then I would keep it outside the car. Also, I don't think they suggest using the cig lighter for the std. battery tender because of amp draw.

I can't imagine any problem, as the Tender doesn't make gas or anything; I'd bet that warning is for the bit of heat that comes out of the slots. I'd think it would be unwise to put a stack of towels on it, but if its sitting on the car floor with nothing on top, seems safe to me.

I've used Tenders for years with my scoots, never a prob of any sort.

The ciggy lighter adapter is actually a Battery Tender (Dentran) component, so I'm going to trust it's a safe configuration.

I use the cig adapter too. So I know it's a good solution. I just remember them asking me which Tender I had because the amperage was an issue. I think it's for the Tender that draws 4 to 6 amps. They said it could blow the fuse on that circuit. I have the Battery Tender Waterproof and it works so good I got 3 of them for the other cars.

You should be fine, but if you can put it outside the car, I would. I cannot find the website, but a guy posted a picture of a Deltran Battery Tender that caught fire, and started a small fire in his camper. A rare occurance, as the unit should have a circuit breaker and over temp breaker...but stuff happens. Probably why they now advise not leaving it in the vehicle. Shouldn't be hard to add on a 10ft section of 16 gauge lamp cord to extend the length to the cigarette adapter.

For everyone else, Radio Shack makes a cig adapter with a long cord on it:

I prefer to leave it outside..but recently while my 355 was being serviced, the Ferrari dealer installed a NAPA on board battery tender (1.5 amp, microprocessor controlled)....so now I am going against my own advice.

Deltran actually makes a 25' ext. cable with the connectors already on it. That's how I keep the Tender outside the vehicle.
