I listed something for sale on Craigslist a few days ago and a guy emailed me this morning asking if it's still available. I told him yes, and he replied by asking for my paypal address--he's buying it for his son and wants me to ship it directly to him. He has added a generous amount to the price to cover it. So, the $64 question is, are there any caveats to giving him my email for PayPal? I appreciate the wisdom of those more experienced.

Well, one thing he could do is claim it was never shipped to him and get his money refunded. I absolutely will not ship to an address that's not the confirmed Paypal address. If you do, Paypal will not help you as you didn't follow their own policy. I'm not saying the guy is trying to rip you off, just relating a possible pitfall.

Unless I knew the person I wouldn't ship to an unconfirmed address if they insist on using Paypal.

I don't see any issues here, that's how paypal works, you could send him an invoice to pay instead of him just pushing money to you.

I wasn't familiar with the invoicing feature--I'm used to using it on eBay where that happens through the ebay site. I typed in his email and it said Premier Member beneath. Not sure if that means anything. But I sent him the invoice through PayPal. I wouldn't normally be so apprehensive except it's a watch, and it's worth a couple bucks. Thanks for the tips.

Unless it's some kid using his dad's credit card. In which case I can't help him there:)

This is looking like a scam. He emailed me to let me know he initiated the payment. I received an email from PayPal saying funds are being held until a shipping tracking number is received. But my PayPal account shows nothing being processed. Anyone care to guess where the shipping address is? Maybe send an empty box...

Anytime they offer more for shipping etc. it's a red flag. It's all part of the con, a.k.a. confidence man.

I would never ship something I was selling on Craigslist.

And FWIW, I sold my watch a couple of weeks ago and the seller paid me using Paypal. I didn't have an account so I sent one up, invoiced the guy, got my money, and a couple of hours later my account was flagged because there was 'suspicious activity'. My money is still held up in my Paypal account and the only reason I sold the freakin' watch was because I needed some cash quick.

    Never using Paypal again.

paypal has seller protection for fraudulent use. I would tell him to send me a postal money order. No paypal fees, no returns. You don't say what the value is. If he is a premier member, i doubt it is a scam. What is the amount?

Keep all of your shipping receipts, emails, ect. If you can show delivery confirmation under $250 or a sig over $250, you should be covered. provide delivery confirmation to them and they should put the money back quickly. Unless he disputes it. I would also call them to get details.

    +1

    Cash only, local only

Put it in all your CL ads. It will save a ton of headache in the future. If someone can't meet those terms, I won't sell to them. That's the beauty of CL.

I did. I gave them a valid tracking number that confirmed delivery, I confirmed my phone number, address, bank account, credit card.. EVERYTHING. I finally got my limitation lifted today after spending an hour being bounced around with 5 (FIVE!) different departments. Needless to say I withdrew my money ASAP.
