Hey guys. I remember reading somewhere that the BMW 318's of the early 1990's were the only production BMW's to not use a BMW-made engine - they outsourced the 4-cylinder from another company.

Can't find anything on this now, can anyone confirm or deny?

    I think that is false.
There were tons of 318s down here during that time and nobody mentioned that story.

I sold those for the BMW dealer when they were new.

The block and head were patterned from the 1986-1992 (E30) M3. Definitely BMW factory stuff......

Its false, the 1991 318i/is has a M42 DOHC motor that is 100% BMW. Its the most modern motor in the e30 chassis cars.

    The e36 cars have a M44 motor.
