I am in the process of changing my timing belts, but I haven't gotten my technical manual yet.

Do I have to remove the air conditioning studs that come out of the front timing cover? I think they have to come out. If so, is it just a matter of binding a double nut to remove it? Thanks a lot!

IME, "yes" to both questions (assuming that the RH gas tank is left in place -- and I can't recall if the WP pulley has to come off too).

Thanks a lot for the quick answer. Should I take the RHS gas tank out? Not thinking about that ahead of time, I still have plenty of fuel in the tanks. It looks as if I can get the job done without taking the tanks out, but if those studs are notoriously a pain, I may go ahead with tank removal.

I wouldn't hassle with removing the RH gas tank unless you were already planning some complimentary work that requires doing some of the labor needed for the removal anyway (refinishing the tank, replacing the crossover hoses, new AC lines, etc.). Of course, if you have problems with the studs you might be forced in that direction, but don't make extra work for yourself. Just draining the fuel out is something that I prefer to avoid ;)

I remove the entire compressor unit. Recover the a/c, remove the 3 studs in from the A/c compressor which hold it to the top bracket, remove lower mounting braket, withdraw the compressor out the top. The only studs you need to remove are the three studs in the top of the A/c compressor.

Congrats on tackling the timing belt repalcement.
As I'm sure you have seen ther are some good posts on the subject, but I thought the best was Ric Rainbolt's 308 procedure. I started to rework it for a 328, but did not quite finish. If you want to see what I did so far, send me a email to [email protected] and I'll send it to you.
