The purpose of this thread is to name a musical genre and list what albums/songs are required listening to jump into that particular style. Be as general as 'Jazz' or as specific as '1983 Southern Polka' :)

This way people can know where to start when trying to listen to new types of music!

    I'll start:

    Genre: Cuban Jazz
    Instrument: Trumpet
    Artist: Arturo Sandoval
    Album: Flight to Freedom

Background: In July 1990 after playing trumpet in his native Cuba for 28 of his 41 years, Arturo Sandoval had the opportunity to defect from Cuba along with his family. A brilliant virtuoso, Sandoval finally was able to play whatever music he wanted without having to satisfy a dictator and his potential was enormous. On his American debut, Sandoval mostly performs boppish jazz with slight touches of rock and spiced with Latin percussion. The trumpeter shows restraint on the ballads (including a tasty "Body and Soul") and displays plenty of fire on the often-funky uptempo romps, not overdoing the effortless high notes. With the assistance of the high-powered tenor of Ed Calle, the versatile guitarist Rene Luis Toledo and a variety of talented sidemen (including guest Chick Corea on three songs), Arturo Sandoval's long overdue debut is well-rounded, exciting and highlighted by a fast rendition of Dizzy Gillespie's "Tanga."

Sandoval was discovered by Gillespie and was taken under his wing. He is considered one of the best Jazz Trumpet players around.

    Worth a listen!

Please, jump in and let's get this going. Post as many albums/songs as you wish! Fun thread, huh? :)

    Hmmmmm
I was born long after this music was created but I'm trying to learn as much as possible about music from the 60s, 70s, etc.

Genre: Progressive Rock (mixing jazz and classic with rock)...
Artists: Electric Light Orchestra, The Moody Blues, Steely Dan
    Albums:
ELO - Out of the Blue (1977), Discovery (1979)
Moody Blues - A Question of Balance (1970)
    Steely Dan - Can't Buy a Thrill (1972), The Royal Scam (1976)

Maybe some more experienced folk can improve or correct my suggestions. I only picked those albums because they had the most 5 star songs based on my ratings

    Alt/surfer/ska rock
Required album: Sublime - 40 oz. to freedom
description - rock riffs with reggae style beats and some sampling

A variant of the ska sound with more rythmic melodies and harder hitting guitar riffs, perfect for when you need an energy lift. Some great lyrics too. A favorite among surfers and skateboarders in the late 90's.

If you like progressive rock you NEED all of the 'Yes' Albums from 1970 to 1974 including 'The Yes Album', 'Fragile', 'Close to the Edge', 'Tales from Topographic Oceans' and 'Relayer'. Start slow b/c if you jump right to 'Tales' you'll get scared off (Tales consists of 4 songs which are each about 20 minutes long)...

    Genre: Zappa
    Instrument: Xylophone
    Artist: Frank Zappa
    Album: Apostrophe / Overnite sensation

    Background
Zappa, like Frank Lloyd Wright, was unsuccessful as a student, being kicked out of college for his atypical views of musical composition. By fusing storytelling and symphonic composition highlighted by the often hyperbaric undertones of xylophonic percussion accents, he created a new style of music. He also created a new vocabulary that carried through all the albums he recorded (over 50 albums). Similar to punk in that vocal perfection was less desired than interesting lyrics.

    GREAT ALBUM!

    Genre: Psychadelic/Blues Rock
    Artist: The Doors
    Album: The Doors

Simply put, one of the greatest albums of all time. A band that was popular in the late 60's into the early 70's that still has heavy influences in music today and pop culture today.

Also, try Tripping Daisy's album I am an Elastic Firecracker. One song got some radio play in the mid 90's, but the whole album is good after you hear it about ten times. It is great after about 50 listens. It is awesome after about 200. I changed it out of my five CD rotation at work after three years. It was the all time office favorite.

Here's a brief snip from someones review at the attached link:

"After a simply stunning classical intro, we are immediately thrown into a pool of misery and sadness. Slow, mournful, with painfully wailing vocals, this album sounds like a constant cry of desperation arising from the depths of a solitary soul, trapped forever in a prison of sorrow and desolation. Never harsh or brutal, the music drags itself forth at an uncomfortably slow tempo, always painful, always depressive, always hopeless. Soft, haunting background choirs, perfect use of flute and violin (the combination of these instruments on the same album almost never fails to send shivers down my spine) and whispers of anguish and uncertainty about one's fate, complete this unusually sombre and dark picture."
