I have a 1984 QV engine I am rejuvenating that appears to have aluminum liners. The crosshatching is practically gone, so I am wondering if anyone has experience in a viable solution. If the liners were a problem from the quality standpoint, maybe there is an alternative liner material?
    Thank you.
    Regards, Alberto

Are you sure it is aluminum? I would have thought it is steel.

If I remember correctly, the liners are nik-a-sil and are very durable, but can be replaced if needed.

"Nikasil" is not the material from which the liners are made --- it is a coating applied the interior walls. The liners are made of Aluminum and coated with Nikasil for wear resistence. Before you try to to re-hone the x-hatch into the liners, you will want to take them in somewhere to determine whether enough of the Nikasil coating remains (or has it been worn away) to make the cylinders re-usable. If too worn, you must replace the liners ----- although there are a few places around that claim to be able to re-coat with Nikasil ---- I've heard mized results about such attempts. Ask the Porsche guys ---- they play with Nikasil liners much more than the Ferrari guys.

It is not aluminum, some form of alloy but not aluminum. Stainless steel is also not magnetic so the magnet test is not valid in this case.

As for your choices, it is generally recommended that the Nikasil liners are not re-honed because it ruins the surface treatment of the Nikasil. If you do not see the crosshatch pattern anymore and you need to replace them, you can still find some new old stock but I bet the prices are steep. Given that you are rebuilding an engine, perhaps you should spend the money to find new liners, or older liners in better shape.

To quote a line from the movie "The Paper Chase" ----

"Very authoritatively stated, Mr. Brooks.... and, very wrong" --- Prof. Kingsfield

The liners on the 4-valve engines are indeed Aluminum alloy. And, all stainless steels are mildly magnetic as they all contain significant amounts of iron. With a sufficiently strong magnet, and a light touch, you can observe the magnetism of SS.

Plenty, to say the least. After quite a lengthy read (thank you!) the conclusion, kinda, is that for the P cars, Alumisil is re-honable, Nikasil, not.
    We'll see...
