Ok, I took my car out earlier this week, and will take it out tomorrow (its going to be 70 degrees in Denver tomorrow!). I have some questions about the shifter and the transmission.

    1) I rest my right hand on the shift knob (almost like an armrest), especially when travelling on the highway or over longer distances at the same speed. I dont bear down, but it does put pressure on the shifter. Will this hurt the alignment of the shift linkage? Could this hurt the transmission itself or weaken the transmission mounts/motor mounts? I dont think it would hurt the trans, but I have heard its not good to do this in a front engined car.

    2) When I rest my hand on the shift knob, I can feel it move a bit if I let off of the gas or when i step on the gas. Is this normal? I've heard with front-engine cars, this can be a sign of weak mounts, but I'm not sure about a mid-engine car.

    Thanks for any feedback

James I don't know about #1,but #2 I get the same thing happening in my 85qv I think Its nothing to worry about,I remember in my 71 240z I would rest my hand on the shifter and would get the same feeling when I pressed on the gas and let off

    James,

If you put any forward or revers pressure on the shifter (e.g. moving it forward and backwards within the shift gate), you are going to wear your synchros. It's also poor driving practice to rest your hand on the shifter. The Bondurant school chastized me for doing that. Hands are to be on the wheel at all times except for when you need to shift.

Not a good habit to get into. The shifter movement results from engine movement. Too much indicates engine mount issues. Plus, too much movement will tend to spill you beer.

I fixed this problem by putting my scotch on the rocks in a sippy cup while driving. But I still don't rest on the shifter.

I believe that it wear out the shift forks, not the synchros. A bad deal in any case. And the shift forks are probably more expensive.

I'm guilty of being a hand-on-shiftknob guy as well.

It's a been change from my 330 2+2 with the direct, in-gearbox shifting mechanism and precise, snick-snick type action when warmed up, to the remote mechanism of the 308...it's obvious by feel that the gearbox is a ways from the lever, but I don't dislike it, just took a little getting used to.

The gated shifter is a very neat feature. Like the 330, it's a pleasure to go through the gears when warmed up; the 308's second gear synchro is also much harder to beat.

    James,
#1 is a no no. Two hands on the wheel.

#2 some movement is normal. Too much indicates worn mounts, could make it harder to shift,

Help! I guess that I'm guilty too. I notice that in the mornings my second gear, and, to a lesser extent, my third gear, is a bit touchy until warmed up. In my driving practice: as I approach an intersection, I pull my shifter from its gear into neutral without using the clutch. Am I wearing out the synchronizers with that practice?

today I took her out for an hour and I check the movement in the shifter and its rock solid no movement as I thought there was b4 so I'm happier and I kept both hands on the wheel
