23 yr old garage queen. Got my covers off yesterday, I can spin the frount tensioner bering freely, very freely. Belt is damaged in a couple of spots on the edges but no missing teeth. Think it has jumped time, why I had a strong gas smell { very strong} when the car was running. Is this possible?? Just ran the car at idle enough to get it in trailer and get it home, so hopefuly no serious damage.

I'm not sure I understand the question. The tensioner mount springs are only used during install, and then locked tight before running.

Since it sounds like you don't have a ton of history on your car, it needs a full major. So, off come the cam covers, all seals and gaskets replaced, valves adjusted, cams timed, etc. etc. The list goes on and on.

Once the cam covers are off, you can check the factory marks on each cam cap in relation to the cams themselves to see if it has indeed skipped a tooth.
Put the engine to TDC and check them before taking the timing belts off.

I've attached a photo of one WAY off, but this was taken after removing the belt, so it moved. The next step was to remove the cams- as shown in the second picture.

This can all be done with the engine in the car.

    Cool- it's coming along nicely.

What I meant by "not understanding the question" is from the title of your thread and frozen spring tensioners.

Sure, it the car's cams were out if time, unburnt fuel might be coming from the tail pipe. You will know for sure once the cam covers come off.

Good luck and please keep us up to speed with your progess.
