Hi All Greetings from the southern tip of africa. My 84 QV GTS is sometimes making a whisteling sound when I start it up, during the first minute or so. It is not the belts, but sounds like a oil shortage sound somewhere in the engine. Oil level is ok, oil pressure is ok. I have tried to catch it with my stethoscope, but no luck. I have driven it many times since first hearing it and all is fine. Not always hearing it as well. Has anybody had similar sounds or maybe an explanation? Regards Jan
I had the same problem for years in the GT4,could never work out what it was but it seemed to be coming from the oil cooler side.. One day my oil cooler developed a leak and l had to replace it. Amazingly the noise disappeared after that.
Might be worth stethoscoping the alternator. This is working at its hardest for the few minutes after starting, recharging the battery which has been drained by starting.
I believe I have a similar issue only on startup when cold. I'm also getting buzzing through the radio speakers on occasion. I've had an audio shop check the grounds but they were unable to duplicate my issue (probably because the car was warm). I plan to recheck the other vehicle grounds soon. Assuming it's the alternator, would a "whining" sound indicate a fault or impending failure? FYI I do keep the battery on a tender but the battery is about 8 years old.
I am familiar with the "alternator-on-its-way-out" sound. Had on both my previous pick-up trucks that problem that etched a mark in my purse. Doubt it is that though. I will though give it my ear. The sound is a whisteling sound, almost as if a valve is making it. Maybe Maurice is on the button here, he mentioned the oil cooler. Is there a thermostat in the oil line/thermostat? Maybe that is where it is coming from.
I had a strange noise like that when the engine was cold. Turned out to be an exhaust manifold gasket leaking. sods law it was on the front bank! The noise wasn't a normal exhaust blow by sound. These gaskets are made from Copper so when they get warm they expand and often the noise then disappears.
Obviously hard to diagnose something like this over the net. However, my car has exhibited both a whirling or whistling sound, and a crackling sound from time to time since new when started cold. When I bought it (new) the Ferrari dealer told me both were normal and not to worry. He said the crackle was static build up on the belts (didn't say which belt) but didn't offer an explanation for the whirling sound. It always bothers me, but it's been doing it for 28 years with no ill effects. However, I have no idea if this is the same sound your car is making.
Thanks Freddie, will check out my manifold. John, the first time I heard the crackle sound, I thought it was a torn timing belt and almost had a heart attack. Not a nice sound. I then phoned my mechanic, who is a old Ferrari hand, who chuckled and told me that it is the small v-belt for the water pump and that a squirt of WD40 will make it go away, wich I did with instant results and massive relief. I did find though that it came back quickly and one day I tried a dry film spray on lube with much better longer term results.
