The straight was running out and Stanislao Sterzel's foot stayed flat to the floor, the V12 behind our heads snarling as the tacho needle went on climbing: six-six... six-seven... six-eight. Even at those revs, in fifth, with the speed in excess of 275 km/h we were still being pressed back hard into our seats, prisoners of that incredible powerplant. Such thrust! Would it ever stop? Was it running away with us, sweeping us beyond control as surely as though we were in the clutches of a riptide? No, it would abate somewhere between 7300 and 7500 rpm. But not on that straight; not before a bend took the road left at something approaching 30 deg. Surely Stanislao had to lift off soon - we were almost on top of it! But no: his foot stayed hard-down. Six-nine... seven... seven-one. And then we were into it. The hands rolled the wheel a little to the left. The loading on our bodies switched to immense lateral pressure, and we could feel the body tugging against its tyres. Or was it the wheels actually tugging against the walls of the tyres? Whatever it was, the communication was intense. And it said that the tyres had no intention of surrendering their purchase upon the road, that Stanislao certainly had not needed to lift off - and now most certainly dare not! Not for an instant was that lateral pressure relaxed, not a centimetre did those rear tyres move sideways. It felt more secure, more tied down than a roller coaster.
We were into the next straight; throttle still wide open and the tachometer needle reached 7500 rpm before an intersection loomed ahead. But those revs, if the figure for the gearing that Lamborghini had given me is correct, meant that we had reached a true speed of 312 km/h with still more in hand; and that we had been through that bend at just on 295.
What an introduction to the Lamborghini Countach S!

_ Mel Nichols, with the late Stanislao Sterzel at the wheel of LP400 #1120112, late 1977.
