It's all in good fun and humor -- my good friend Bret, owner of an '81 Mondial 8 seems to be under the sorry assumption that he can beat my '86 328 GTS in a drag race.

So here are some more specifics -- he just rebuilt the engine, did some minor tweaks (upgraded cams, will be putting in new high-flow injectors and a new ignition system.) It is a Euro car federalized for the US. He also has 360 Modena wheels on it, which while making it look awesome, are significantly taller (1.5 inches in diameter taller.)

My 328 GTS has 85,000 miles on it. It has been four years since last major, including valve adjustment. It still seems very tight. It is all stock, with the exception of removed cats. Bret says it's old and slow.

From the books/research materials I have, I've come up with this:
    BretMondial 8:
    Hp: 205hp
    Torque: 181 ft-lbs
    Dry Weight: 3496 lbs
    Pounds per hp: 17.05
    0-60: 9.4sec (highest) to 8 sec (lowest)

    328 GTSammy
    HP: 260hp
    Torque: 213 ft-lb
Dry Weight: 3134 lbs (3120 without targa top.)
    Pound per hp: 12.05
    0-60: 6.0-6.5 sec

Now, in terms of driver skill, Bret has me cold. He has years of drag racing experience. He can drive (and work on) anything with an engine -- and fast at that. In terms of drag-race launches, I'm not nearly as good as he is at leaving the line quickly. (If the course has corners, though, I have more experience racing with left and right turns.)

Weight-wise- I probably weigh ten pounds more than him, if that.

The question is: Does he have a shot in hell of beating me? I told him I could beat his Mondial in my '86 Dodge 600ES Turbo convertible (which actually isn't that slow -- 7.7 0-60mph.)

As I said -- it's all in good fun, and we're having a great time jarring back and forth. It might have to be settled at Bremerton Speedway this spring...

...but until then -- what do you all think?

just an FYI, unless he plans on updating the FI to something new. there is no 'high flow' injectors for the CIS, they operate under fuel pressure and constantly 'flow' fuel regardless of the cams timing.

with that said, it depends on what he does to the performance of the mondial, stock for stock no, unless he gets you on the launch. but lets be real here dropping the clutch on these cars for a drag race isn't the smartest thing to do.

Funny you should say that, because I had visions in my mind of how I launch my different cars -- my C5 Corvette: 2600RPMs and drop the clutch, slowly going to full throttle (and power shift to 2nd and 3rd.) '60 Triumph TR3: anything over 1500RPM with a drop induces wheel hop. Miata: 4000RPMs and side-step clutch. Dodge 600ES: hold brake-pedal, bring revs up until the turbo starts to spool (it's an automatic.)

Ferrari? 1000RPMs gently release clutch---then floor the accelerator. I can't stomach burning the clutch up!

I would say you could keep your repair bills down by not drag racing in a Ferrari and settling it online.

The 328 will eat the M8 alive. But if he were to drop a supercharger in there....look out!

This guy is not some bumpkin, he's an experienced racer. He know what you have and knows you THINK you know what he has but you don't know what he has. He did some mods on the car. If he says seriously he can beat you, he has an ace up his sleeve. I'd put $100 on him.

It's too obvious that a stock 8 will not beat a stock 328.

    Ken,
Don't forget that we're good friends. Both of us enjoy the yapping back and forth...and neither would really care if we lost.

I don't care who wins, it is just nice to see someone in an m8 seriously considering trying to beat any car. ;)

All it would take is a nitrous kit, pretty cheap, and he could waste a 328!
