So California restricted race gas sales to only people that race when they were preparing for a race. Many people have off-road toys that require race gas, which would not qualify, some places were having you produce a race license before they would sell you any. Bit of a problem for me, as I don't race any more. Some had to make up elaborate stories, documentation, or have their racer buddies buy the fuel for them.

It took less than a year for someone to read enough regulations for a work around:

When you go to buy race gas, you are buying it for a boat, not a car. No regulation on race gas for boats.

Another attack on the so called rich by the Socialists... if you have enough money for a high performance vehicle you need to be punished.

they're not stopping anybody or anything, just slowing it down and making it more expensive and more of a hassle. way to go, California.

there's a 76 station in West LA (Barrington and Pico, I think) that had "race gas" listed on their sign. never stopped to see if they sell it, or what octane it is.

Ok, time to clear up the misinformation.

They sell it all over the place. You can get a variety of high octane pump gas all across So Cal.

The distributor for VP Racing Fuels is Sawyer Petroleum, based in Santa Paula, which is what a lot if not most performance shops carry. VP Racing fuel UNLEADED blends meet CA RFG regulations for on and off road use.

C16 or Sunoco 117 are restricted because they are LEADED.

Sawyer Petroleum will sell you unbranded or VP branded racing fuels direct to consumer and even supply you 5gal pails or a 55gal drum if you need it.

As a consumer, they would also sell me methanol, 99.95% pure equal to 122/123 octane, and it would be entirely my fault if I fed that into an on road vehicle. :p
