Exclusive: Plans for new Racing Point factory revealed Image Unavailable, Please Login Plans have been unveiled for the Racing Point Formula 1 team to build a brand-new £25 million factory at its Silverstone site. Planning permission for the new facility will be sought this month and the team hopes to be able to start building later in the year. The plan is to have construction complete in time for the 2021 Formula 1 season. The images were exclusively revealed in this month's F1 Racing magazine, which goes on sale today, 4th April. "This is a new chapter, the dawn of a new era and there is huge energy from the shareholders to invest and help the team become a regular podium contender in the future," said Racing Point team principal Otmar Szafnauer. "The team has never been more stable or in better hands and this project aims to attract and retain the best staff in Formula 1." Racing Point's current factory is based opposite the gates to the Silverstone grand prix circuit, covering an area of three acres. It was originally built for the Jordan squad's Formula 1debut in 1991 and has housed the various iterations of the team since then, including Midland, Spyker and Force India. But the factory has long outgrown the staffing levels required for a modern F1 organisation and is in critical need of redevelopment. Over the past decade, headcount at Force India has grown substantially. Last August, when Racing Point took over, staffing levels had increased to 405 from the 280 in 2009. Since then the team has added another 20 employees and plans to expand by an additional 180 over the next two years as it seeks an ambitious push in performance. When the consortium, headed up by Canadian billionaire Lawrence Stroll, took over Force India in the summer, one of the priorities was to look at developing the Dadford Road base. Since then a deal has been struck to purchase the land around the site to increase the size of the Racing Point HQ ten-fold, to 30 acres. There is a two-stage redevelopment of the site, with the first phase already underway. At present an overspill of 125 employees are based at a second location in Brackley, but they are being moved into Dadford Road with rented Portakabins housing staff in the car parks around the factory. Warehouse space is also being rented for the team's simulator and race operations room in the industrial units close to their current base. The team's modus operandi has been to out-source much of the construction of its chassis, but the plan for the new facility is to create a manufacturing centre of excellence to bring car build in-house. The ratio of personnel employed between the design office and manufacturing will be determined by the make-up of the 2021 regulations – which have yet to be finalised by the sport's governing body. "Our new facility will be able to house the expansion we have planned of increasing staffing levels to around 600," Szafnauer told F1 Racing. "We need everyone under one roof, we want to expand our manufacturing output, create a nice canteen, some office space, meeting rooms and a gym for our employees – everything we don't have at the moment. "But we don't plan for it to be too opulent. We still need to retain our DNA and our racer's ethos, so it will be purpose-built for performance." The plans to upgrade the factory to a new state-of-the-art, sustainable building is an indication of Stroll's long-term commitment to the sport and a boost to the Motorsport Valley economy around Silverstone and in the UK – particularly in the uncertain political landscape. https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/racing-point-new-silverstone-factory/4364589/#gal-4364589-0-racing-point-factory-43648607
impressive yes but I fail to see how a shiny new factory will help the team move (substantially) forward on the grid, to regular podium contenders as they aim... So far it doesn't look like either Ferrari, Red Bull or Mercedes will leave the sport in a hurry. and it would take something crazy for them to not be contenders for a win (even with Red Bull's massive gamble on the Honda engine). We have Renault as a factory team with a larger budget and better drivers. Mclaren is finally moving forwards, with a **** engine. If they can get their hands on a Mercedes engine again they'll be even more of a threat to the podium. Alfa is the de-facto B team of Ferrari and Haas buys a lot of their parts from Ferrari also. That's a lot of teams to fight to even get near the podium. And we haven't even addressed Toro Rosso, who currently has taken rolling engine test bed role for Red Bull Honda, but I've got a feeling they'll be moving up the grid also. A lot riding on this new factory. I think the money is better spend on some seriously talented aero/chassis people in order to get Stroll on a podium.
RBR switching to Honda wasn't a gamble. They reached end of their relationship with Renault who can't really be arsed to screw together a good engine package. At worst they remain where they were. At best they have a works engine that will eventually allow them to push for the top podium. Honda left a toxic partner. RBR left a toxic partner....and they are both hungry for wins. Racing Point...I don't know what they want to achieve in F1. They are never going to challenge the top 3. 25MM is a drop in the bucket for them, though.
Capital expenditures or Cap ex as the accountants like to call it on the "books". It's a right off on thier taxes. Plus they(Racing Point) have ALOT of sponsors. Thier sponsorship wall is littered with sponsors. Most sponsors are'nt big money. They beat teams teams with 40 or 60 years of F1 history and a car manufacturer thats 10x their budget....while their owners bring DRAMA to the team.
Lawrence Stroll, just like Gene Haas maybe, has understood that F1 is a business first, and a sport second. He should not be underestimated. Racing Point may never make history, but Strooll isn't in it to lose money either !
Racing Point to use Mercedes wind tunnel RaceFans understands Racing Point will begin using the Mercedes wind tunnel in the second half of this year, when it starts development of its new car for the 2020 F1 season. https://www.racefans.net/2019/04/08/racing-point-to-use-mercedes-wind-tunnel/
From memory, I thought the old Force India team had a technical agreement with McLaren. I can imagine this has changed and Mercedes would like to have some influence in a B team.
Racing Point denies Montoya working as a mental coach for Stroll Image Unavailable, Please Login Racing Point has denied that former Grand Prix driver Juan Pablo Montoya is working with Lance Stroll as a mental coach. Several media outlets reported that the Colombian has been coaching Stroll in 2019 as he competes in his first season for Racing Point. Montoya was present in Barcelona last weekend at the Spanish Grand Prix, with some outlets claiming that he had been spotted with Racing Point, wearing one of their team shirts. However, GPToday.net was informed by a Racing Point spokesperson that "there is absolutely nothing true about these rumours" that were circulating the Barcelona paddock. Stroll failed to finish the race last weekend after he made contact with Lando Norris in the second half of the race at Turn 2. This season, Montoya is racing once more with Roger Penske, having kept a contract with him following the end of his IndyCar career. Penske has drawn up a 2019 IMSA program for him and semi-retired IndyCar driver Helio Castrovenes in collaboration with Acura, competing in the DPi class. https://www.gptoday.net/en/news/f1/247588/racing-point-denies-montoya-working-as-a-mental-coach-for-stroll
As I said before, clearly a team on the up. Never underestimate a well financed F1 team (unless it's name is Toyota).
