    Are there any schools that will teach you in your own car? I agree that I would probably learn more and faster with an instructor sitting next to me, but I would really like to do it in my R8 instead of a Miata. Not really because it's faster or better, but because I'd like to learn on a car that I'd actually drive and like to track.

    Oh, there are schools like that but 1) quality of instruction and 2) potential damage to your car put the smart money elsewhere.

    More importantly--and if you're still serious about race driving--you need to learn to make a momentum (i.e. low horsepower) car go fast first before you get in a race car with more than 200 horsepower.

    At the Russell school in Sonoma, you can take your car there for a performance drive. The instructor will sit shotgun, and then drive the car himself. If you're new to this, it's a good way to get feedback and learn the track.
