Can anyone reccomend a racing seat which fits a 1979 308GTB which is 'sunken' enough to prevent my head hitting the roof when wearing a crash helmet.

    Thanks

I would guess it would depend on how tall you are...
    Good Luck!

I have tried two and ended up with an OMP (sorry, I do not remember the model). I have to scrunch down in the seat with my helmet. Not ideal. A 348 challenge seat if you can find one would probably be the way to go. You want more recline than most of the brands offer.

The Michelotto and other 308-based race cars tend to have the false floor beneath the driver's seat removed which provides an added inch of headroom.

    BTW, I am 5'9".

I have OMP seats with no sliders on the 83 GTS with the seats bottoms touching the floor. I have the seats raked back to give a fairly good driving position. With the top on, the helmet just misses the headliner with the 5 point harness tighten down all the way ( I'm 5'10"). I'm not sure if the GTB gives you more headroom. I do not run with the top on.

Anyway, if you do not have at least 2 inches above your helmet, I would stongly suggest you figure another way to lower the seating position IMHO. One good shot and there goes your neck. I guess I'm getting conservative in my old age.

Do a search as this is regularly covered and in particular the chap with 'music' in his handle did a long essay on his conversion

The short answer is that it is a nightmare without the sunken floor

That's me. Used Sparco Roadsters. They are not 'true' full side race seats, yet better than the stock seats IMHO. Used the OMP low-rise aluminum side brackets. Given your 6' height and 31" legs, it is going to be tough. Am almost exactly 5' 11.35" high and have the side brackets.. oh h@ll. Be right back in 5 minutes as i am going to take some pics...

As you can see from the pics... you are SOL unless you REALLY slouch. Yes, i realize the rear has one more hole down to go, adding maybe 1/2 inch. With my Bell ??? ($400) helmet if i SLOUCH i'd get about an inch of clearance using the lowest hole. Even if i used the lowest rear seat bracket hole, i'd be happy to achieve 1 to 1.5-inch. 2 inches or more??? Not sure it can be done unless you are the King of Slouchers :(

I mounted mine on sliders and when in situ the rear of the seat is probably 1/2 inch above the false floor. It is not really good enough (typ italian, long arms, short legs driving position) but means I can drive with a helmet. As "greyboxer" has indicated, if you are serious, you need to cut the floor.

The problem with slouching is the chips hit the fan, the last thing you are thinking about is slouching. That is why it is very important to have the harness tighten all the way to the point it hurts.( You'll be suprised how 'loose" the belts have become after a full session). As a test, buckle your self in with your helmet on, put you hand on top of the helmet and try your best to hit your hand on the headliner. If you can, back to the drawing board. Good luck.
