Having read so many write up ref a worn rack bush (passenger side bush that seems to fail a lot) I have decided to replace mine but I cannot decide if I should make one out of brass or Nylon....anybody made one recently and if so what did you use ?

Superformance offers a Nylon one...and they day we need TWO per....does that sound correct ?

Secondly , I see so many pics showing how to dismantle the rack and I note that the inner ball joint has to be removed by levering the locking device back with a small tool and then undoing the assembly.....except mine is different ...it has a pin inserted to lock it and then a sort of cross peening whacked into into it...I wonder why my rack is different to everybody ...and it was original...it is stamped Lh 21111 and then 154266324...any explanation...did ferrari use different types...its made by camgear...

finally , would you chose to but a new one from Superformance UK at about £400 or have the old one overhauled for about £300....??

Hi the steering rack is made by camgear in the uk, basically the same as a left hand drive classic mini with different tie rod length. The mini rack is available for £60 new. I bought this to use the internals to refurb mine. Any steering rack refurb company will be able to sort it out for minimal cost. If you do refurb yourself you will need set the preload correctly otherwise you will either have stiff steering or excessive play again.

Thanks ... If they are the same , why not just use internals, why not just change the rods and then just bolt the whole thing in ?
    Thanks for your comments

You can do just need to decide which mini rack gearing best suits what you want, ie standard or quick rack. Your rack gear is unlikely to be worn

Throwing away your original and perfectly renewable steering rack would be a shame if you ask me. These cars are now so rare and valuable that potential new owners will be looking into details like this. The rack is marked with fabrication year and type identification so any change out will be visible. It is a excellent DIY project to overhaul the rack if you have the interest and skills and it is one of the most covered project if you do a search on this site.

You can follow one of my steering rack endeavor’s here: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/206-246/430377-rebuild-steering-rack.html

As you mention you have another type of locking mechanism on the inner joints. You will have to remove the locking pins before you can undo the threaded connection. The easiest way to do this is to mill out each pin with a small hand held Dremel grinder with a diamante cutter. Good luck.

    Regards Peter

Buy a new one and install it in the car. Rebuild the old one or merely store it in the garage.

Thank you for your advise....'however'...as it turns out non of the write ups on this excellent forum have the same rack, which is odd...today I managed to strip the old one....wish I hadn't now...impossible to remove the old Bush without first drilling out three rivet pegs and then splitting the Ali end piece apart and only then will it come out......had to heat it up to do that...now I really don't know which type or size of bush to source as I seem to be the only one with this type.....it is stamped 1967......and not sure where to et the pins to put the end back together either...but I could tap and screw.....anybody ever seen such a rack in a Dino ??...
