Trying to get my 86 3.2 back to it's normal self. Tracking down a "running a little warmer than usual" problem, I first thought the Rad Cap was bad. Easily replaced. Same problem. It's obvious the expansion tank itself is rusting through. So, how easy is this to replace myself? A few bolts, a few hoses? I'm no mechanic but I can turn a wrench. A better question probably, what's a good price for one and would you buy a used one?

I really want to drive my car, and I'm hoping this is the final step!

    Hey Lou,

Call FerrParts, in Sacotomato (Sacramento) - (916) 974-1939. Ask to speak to Punu.
This should be an easy fix.

    Cheers,

    Hank

My mech says he has one on the shelf and will put it in for $300. Doesn't sound bad to me. I've seen them priced from 370 - 650.

Thanks so much for the info. I may just go with my mechanic, even though I'd like to do it myself. Needs to go in for an oil change, so I'll just have him do both.

Sounds like a deal to me... Just make sure its from a Mondial 3.2/QV. While you are at it, you should flush out the old coolant, replace the termostat and refill and bleed. That should take care of the over heating if its not related to the fan or waterpump. If you want to repair it yourself, its just a few bolts, will need to clean out the rust and weld it.

    Best,
    Mike

Wait until you see the underside!. The inside may be OK if the coolant mix has been kept within specification. The tank in the attached photo was refurbished satisfactorily and the cooling system flushed and re-filled (thermostat and pump checked as well).

Straightforward job to remove the tank. 3 fixings to the top (try not to lose the small metal sleeves inside the rubber bushings) along with 2 pipes and the air by-pass valve under to loosen and remove. Have a container handy to catch the cooling mix when the pipes are taken off.

The 2 mounting bolts for the air by-pass valve may well be badly rusted and can easily break off when attempting to remove the securing nuts. I have used thermal conducting epoxy to re-attach the valve to the tank when the bolts have sheared off.

30min of work if you have a new one. There is a little drain underneath to get most of it out. or simply unplug the lower thick hose and catch the coolant. From there it is 2 bolts and one nut, a connector and the auxiliary valve underneath and it's off. Anyone can do this as log as you keep the hose higher then the tank you will not need to bleed system.

Ps, if it is leaking from the inside out the tank is practically not to be saved.. Hope you find a good tank still.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I'll be going with a new one. Or used in "good condition". So I'll send you pics of the old one.

Correct! Punu has been a great help to me since aquiring the Mondial. I actually prefer Ferrparts to the others.
