Not that I ever need one, but I have noticed that the power in the cigarette lighter is not the same as other cars, and therefore, I cannot power my Valentine 1 Radar detector im my 360 Spider.

Has anyone else with a V1 been able to work around this issue?

In my 355 I have it mounted just above and to the left of the rear view mirrior, and wired in to the overhead light.

For months I had my V1 plugged into the cigarette lighter with no problem. The only problem I had was the wiring from windshield to the lighter was just way too much and in the way. So, I ended up re-wiring it.

I've had a V1 plugged into my 360's lighter outlet since day one. No problems.

I didn't mean running a wire FROM the cigarette lighter, you cut the V1 power cord down to about 6 inchs and wire it directly into the over head light power supply.

James, you must have read my mind....

I have a 360 as well and have been considering getting one of the radar detector. Where can I get this Valentine 1 detector? Is this the best in the market (suitable for 360)?

Just a word of caution, hook it up to a switched power as opposed to unswitched. I forgot to turn mine off last Tuesday and when I was going to the races yesterday (Sunday) the battery was dead. Nothing like waking up 6:30 AM and looking to go on a caravan and the car wouldn't start. But the good old roll and push start in 2nd fired her right up and a few miles of 150+ MPH charged her back up just fine! This moring started o.k. This had never happened to me since I either have the V1 in my other cars or I drive the 360 three four times a week. Just curious can one push start a F1 paddle shifter?

I think you can push start the F1 but if the battery is totally dead it wouldnt make sense that it would work? Anyone done it?

V1 is tops. Most Ferraris only have unswitched power in the overhead lights. It's easiest to wire into, but you have to turn it off if you dont use the car for a while (as Matt discovered). It's fine to leave on overnight / two days.

my 360CS manual says it is possible:

    * perform the "system startup" phase
    * request the "up" while the vehicle is gaining speed with the gearshift in "N"

then later in the manual it says:

    push starting of the car:
"this maneuver should be avoided where possible since it could cause fuel inflows to the catalytic converters and damage them irreprarably".

I actually wired up a new V1 into my 360 2 days ago. As noted above, just run a flat 6-8 inch V1 power cord, or regular telephone cord (just need the center 2 wires), into the clock/light box and tap it into the switched power lead (I think it was the yellow one). I'm not using the inline fuse that came with the V1 cord (no room in the light box), but am relying upon the car fuse for the line. I just hope the 360 fuses actually match the wire ratings... - Tim

Or you can just put in the K40 and Blinder Laser Jammers - so you don't see a thing and are invisible to police laser :) but it does cost a little more - ok - 1000 more... but you can't see it and I have really cool lights in my dash now :)

I think I've seen those installed at local Ferrari shop, do they tell you which direction the radar is coming from?

I did mean to mention one thing - seriously about my k40 on my 355 spider. I had the first edition of the series II (installed in 1997) - didn't have the laser jammers (or lasers back then) - recently I decided to put in the Blider Laser Jammers (due to Ohio has mostly Laser Patrols). I noticed once the jammers were in - that my Radar dector was starting to fritz out... And frankly it was 8 years old and didn't dectect a lot of the bands out now anyway - so I also would use my V1 on the windshield... (Triple protection :)

So finally my K40 went out completely just constant beeping every few seconds - I called the K40 tech and they told me a couple of potential problems with the sensors in the front of the car - that wasn't the problem... It turned out after a few more calls and tech support they determined that it was the control unit - which is the big dollar ticket item... Best part about this - I sent it back to K40 corp per their instructions - and for just the cost of shipping and return/insurance - $40 dollars - the replaced it with a brand new Control Unit (which is around 800) - 7 years later!

The funny thing - I have a series one I ripped out of an old porsche back in 1994 - due to the fact that it didn't work with the new radars (installed in 1991 - if I remember correctly) - I had it laying in the garage - while I had the tech on the phone - I asked can I send that one back too - to get a new unit... He said sure - so I got a new one for my daily driver as well... I had to buy the new front sensor for it (100) and shipping which was shipped with the first one... That is pretty remarkable service for a electronic device that was 10+ years old!

To me that is really hard to beat that type of backing of a product - and I can say - I really got my money's worth on my original 1400 investment...

Not with the arrow like the V1 - it will tell you based on which light is going off - if it is a front or back hit... (that is for the radar).

The laser jammers (I just installed the front) - some people do the back as well - however 99% of police will not laser target from behind - they only target ongoing - a lot to do with accuracy and target area - so I didn't bother... I also don't run a front license plate either - which also hampers the polices ability to target your car - since the primary target is the front plate (as an FYI).

I have a V1 in all of my cars except the 355 GTS. It came with a K40 that was installed by the first owner (1996, no laser protection). Anyway I called the tech line for K40 and it looks like I'll need a repair to the front sensor and the rear one is just plan missing.

I can barely hear the diagnostic beeps that the unit puts out with the top off. My question to those that have used both is...should I sink about 800.00 to revive the K40 or get another V1 and spend the time to make a concealed mount that attaches to the roof behind the passenger's head?

Greatly appreciate hearing from someone that has experience with both.

I have had both and currently run with K40's in two of my 3 cars. The V1 is the performance champ, hands down. For those of you that know Merdav (green 355 Spider), he's done a very nice install whereas his V1 is up high on the windshield over his rearview mirror and hardwired through the overhead light. You can also take your car to a high end audio shop where they have rearview mirrors that have the concealed display w/arrows built in for the V1. They can then place the box properly mounted (stealth) within the car and even upholster it to make it look like a part of the interior. This will be in the $3k plus range however as cost is concerned. I run the K40 because it's clean and effective...not as effective as the V1 (Merdav gets a signal a good 2+ sec before I do when we are running side by side), but I do have more than enough time to react (in most cases). I have the front only radar w/laser diffuser custom mounted in my grills. It's a very clean setup and as sound is concerned, the chirps are much more audible then the V1 or Escort models. You may just have an issue with your speaker if it isn't loud enough for you in a GTS. Oh and as for the rear radar module...I frankly thin kit is a waste of money. the front unit will pick up the signal and unless you have the arrows, you will slow down and adjust speed regardless. Just my $.02 of course.
