I am going to be in San Diego and drive up PCH through Los Angeles, Carmel and end in San Francisco. I have a Velentine One and am considering packing it - what is conventional wisdom on radar, California Highway Patrol and other things as I make my way West and North.

    Thanks.

100% bring it. CHP here are still using KA so detection is decent.

Use it especially on Hwy 101 North of Santa Barbara. Most CHPs just run with the radar on and rarely use on/off. At night they love to just sit on the side of the road with all lights out running radar. You can pretty much run 10 MPH over with no problem.

This has saved my liscense many times, but a word of advice When you are in an area where the CHP are known to watch very closely ie Santa Maria just take it off of the windshield and drive less then 10 mph over. Then when you are in the clear put it back in and drive as you like on the clear roads. The CHP seems to watch for passing cars especially weaving in and out of traffic, flashing your brights to get someone to move over etc. Following too close is also something they will watch you closely for and is dangerous as well. Best place to open her up is north of San Luis Obispo where it is is flat and straight and good visability for a long distance. I got these tips from a friendly CHP who wishes to remain anonomyous but vintage races an old Corvette and used to train officers.
ps Red or Yellow cars are much more visable and look much faster then Silver,Black,Navy or Titanium

Instead of being an egotistical threat to the public safety of families in California, all of whom will be out on highways with you this holiday season (and with you... who doesn't know the highways , driving in traffic patterns you're not familiar with...why don't you just enjoy your vacation and relax and drive at (about) the speed limit?)

Oh right, you're in a rental and can do whatever you want!

Instead of speeding like an idiot- just because you can- you might respect the other people on the highway who are making lane-change and turn decisions- based on the expectation that (you) are also in the same speed range.

i do not think anyone should be weaving in and out of traffic at an excessive speed endangering others. I hope we are talking cruising around 85 and waiting for cars to move over. It is not that crowed on the roads up here. North of Paso Robles and south of King City the speed limit is 70 and you can easily cruise at over 100 but the CHP love to work that area

Some people can safely drive over the speed limit. Some people can't drive safely at any speed.

So, (you?) should take a driving class and learn how. It's pretty easy actually. Have a nice day, Junkie

I want to thank everyone for the advice and info - I cannot begin to suggest how to respond to George, however. BUT......

You do not know me George; I have been in Southern California for 2 days now and can say that driving at 80 mph+ is THE NORM. I cannot understand how you can judge me, let alone suggest that I could be an "egotistical threat to the public safety of families in California" - or even begin to comprehend what that means.

Are you suggesting that the traffic patterns or drivers in Southern California are that much different that those elsewhere? Better, worse, less predicable perhaps?

And can you seriously say that "other people on the highway mak[e] lane-change and turn decisions- based on the expectation that (you) are also in the same speed range."?? You ARE kidding, right? Take a look around George - open your eyes.

Trust me, you would rather have me on the road next to you - someone with many years of track and racing experience and professional auto driving courses (defensive, performance and otherwise) - than many of the folks whom I have encountered in the last two days here.

    Whatever..............

King City is a known speed trap. The town relies on income from speeding tickets. If you exceed the limit there, you will get ticketed. So, no speeding in king city, even with a detector. Otherwise, a V1 and vigiliance is all you need to cruise safely at high speeds.

George, ignore this post. Everyone else, ignore George.

Wow, you sure put me into my place. This one (above) was the best...a ^#^#$mouth kid who races carts

And as for the hot shot from New York who started all of this nonsense, I'd actually only feel safe with you nowhere in sight. Someone like you, with your ego and "cred" would be wrapped around some poor slob's family (none of whom would appreciate your incredible driving skills) and I'd be in the pack of cars that would all be tied up while they cut your corpses out of the cars.

Thank you Modenafan - I agree and given this poster's relative new status (low number of posts, none of which I can say has added much to this forum), I do not thnk he will be missed.

May I also add that I have had a great time driving the roads of your fair State - great roads, quick pace (mostly 80+) and prudent driving by most -

Sorry fellas, Darth's rule applies here, not 1.1.

Start a thread about breaking the speed limit, and some do-gooder is bound to jump in and suggest that it's stupid. Then the round about of "I'm right, no, I'm right and you're wrong" begins.

A series of small insults usually follows. I think this falls under, "Ask and ye shall receive."

    No foul here.

Just did a search and found a bit of info ... most of it fairly old. Have opinions of the Solo S2 improved any over the past couple of years?

I prefer the Escort X50 and it works excellent. I think the only problem with the Solo is having to replace batteries. I would think the new Escort 9500 is pretty good.
