Hi all, My F8 has a bad 12v adaptor for my Uniden R3 radar detector. It constantly loses connection and I can’t rely on it. So instead, I was looking into USB cords that connect to my radar detector, and have found some on Amazon. Has anybody tried connecting your radar detector to the USB port? Is there anything I need to know before trying this? Would it be adequate to supply power? It seems like an easy fix to my problem. Thanks to anybody who can advise
I haven't tried what you are suggesting. I think your best bet would be to contact the support folks at Uniden directly and see if there are any issues. https://uniden.com/pages/support There is also a radar enthusiast forum where every radar detector combination known to man is discussed. You could also try there as well. https://www.rdforum.org/ If the F8 is under warranty, have 'em replace the charging port...? ...bob
I completely agree with Bob in Texas. Personally, I prefer a hardwired connection directly from the fuse box. In my experience, USB ports don’t always provide enough consistent power for a radar detector — the amps can fluctuate, which affects performance. That said, the R3 is pretty outdated by today’s standards. I’d recommend upgrading to the R8 for improved features and functionality. You can also pair it with an app called R8 Companion for even more capabilities. Of course, there’s a wealth of knowledge and options shared on the radar detector forum that’s been mentioned — definitely worth checking out.
I believe OP is saying it loses connection because the standard plug in to cigarette lighter is too far away and the cord pulls it out a little... I could be wrong... the USB port is closer to the windshield and probably doesn't have the coiled style cord so it won't 'pull out'... but regardless, I've never used that port so wouldn't know if it's a viable option. Hardwiring is best but I haven't done that either. I recently just got mine (escort 360 MAX with dashcam) and I just use the supplied coiled cord and cigarette lighter connection because I switch it back n forth with my Porsche. It doesn't pull out on me.
What do you guys think of an adaptor like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07N1LZ693/?tag=rdf0cd0c-20
If you're going to run a long cord, you may as well run the full hardwire kit cable into the fuse box with a fuse tap.
that looks interesting-- let us know if that works... i'm not sure if the usb is the correct or enough power level but let us know. I might grab one of those too if so.
I used this style of usb on a long road trip and never lost power on a 360 max, bmw has the same issue with the 12v plug not staying in. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Funny I had the same issue with uniden and my F8. I contacted them and no solution. Honestly, I wrapped some electrical tape and some rubber band around it and its worked 100% since.
Hi! How do you like your new escort 360 MAX with dashcam? Does it record video only while driving? Any feature to allow recording while your F8 is parked? Looking for a little piece of mind when your car is parked and your away from it few hours)..I also don't want to hardwire a dash cam Do you really need a Radar detector these days? Haven't used one since the 90's...most apps like Waze /Apple will tell you where accidents and police "activity" is going on..My Wife's MBZ driving App will even tell you when there is a pothole in the road..
The only way is to get a blend mount and hardwire tap kit. There is power up in the mirror. It's a very easy install.
I was just going to ask that. So the F8 rearview mirror is powered? Would something like this work: https://www.amazon.com/Radar-Mount-Detector-Hardwire-3005201U/dp/B078939GZ2/ref=asc_df_B078939GZ2?mcid=dfb7fa4508403718b174e2a8eedcc0f3&hvocijid=4751262397788852728-B078939GZ2-&hvexpln=73&tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=721245378154&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=4751262397788852728&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9021431&hvtargid=pla-2281435177658&psc=1
Radar detector has saved my ass so many times I can’t even count. Including this past weekend when I did my morning drive and was well over 100. Waze def doesn’t always work. a cop was in a speed trap and proceeded to follow me hitting me with the radar for about 15 minutes trying to catch me from a distance.
I like it-- Haven't used one in years but it feels good having one again. As for the dashcam, I still havent figured that out-- it does only records while driving (or while car is on) but my issue is that i can't view the videos it takes. If i try while in the car to look at videos, it sayd I cant because I'm connected to apple carplay (while in my other car) and if I try after I turn car off, it can't connect to device to show me the videos. Another annoying thing is that you must open the app on your phone and allow both the radar and cam to connect before they work properly. Not a big deal but annoying. The only way I can view videos it seems is to pull in garage, turn off car, disable carplay and my porsche cigarette outlet. stays active for about 20 minutes so I have time to connect my app to the unit's wifi and then I can see the videos but I've only been able to replicate this twice. Anyweay, answe is I still like it. (the radar part at least)
Forget the radar detector. Fact is you wont stay below allowed speeds if you drive a Ferrari. Get ready for fines at best or lose your license at worst or the absolutely worst car towed away and compounded for 30 days. At best try to avoid the 3 status.
you love mentioning losing licenses lol. That's a VERY RARE thing so it's weird for you to say. Well, it's rare in Canada and the US, maybe it's common in Austraila? oh, and i'd LOVE for my car to be compounded. many many times. Impounded, on the other hand, would definitely suck.
Rare yes , ill listen to you, possible yes both America and Canada. Everyone speeds hence wanting a radar detector . The thing is NOT getting caught.
USB power should work if your Uniden R3 supports it just check the voltage (needs 5V). Some detectors don’t power on via USB, so test it first. If it works, it’s a cleaner fix than the 12V adapter. Just get a good-quality USB cable to avoid connection issues.
Yeah not getting caught is precisely why you buy the radar detector. And it’s not about staying below the speed limit, it’s about slowing down when radar is at use in the area. Or you can lose you license but I like driving and prefer never having to go near a traffic court or DMV ever again
I just ordered this, has anybody used this for their F8? https://www.amazon.com/Radar-Mount-Detector-Hardwire-3005201U/dp/B078939GZ2/ref=asc_df_B078939GZ2?mcid=dfb7fa4508403718b174e2a8eedcc0f3&hvocijid=4768207103187885773-B078939GZ2-&hvexpln=73&tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=721245378154&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=4768207103187885773&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9021458&hvtargid=pla-2281435178138&psc=1#averageCustomerReviewsAnchor
My radar detector paired with Waze has saved my ass multiple times, in the Ferrari and in just regular daily drivers. Another overlooked benefit of radar detectors is that often times the officer didn't actually radar you he just thought you were visually driving too fast, with the radar detector you would know this and ask for the reading....I've done that before and the officer had to let me go. I honestly don't even think I was speeding it wasn't in the Ferrari and if I was it was at best 5-8 over, the officer was visibly annoyed that I was insisting on the radar reading which I knew he didn't have. He was trying to get cute and told me he would only give me a fine with no points ticket and I said no I want to see the reading. I also have the maxcam 360, it doesn't record with the car off as far as I know which isn't ideal but as far as seeing the footage I do it with the app no issue and just in case for whatever reason I can't turn it on I bought a little SD card reader adapter for my phone that I keep in the car.
I guess mine would probably work in the ferrari since I don't have carplay but I havent tried to view while in the ferrari. In the porsche, it just keeps telling me i cant view videos becasue im connected to apple carplay.
