America is a country built on the principle of individual freedom, with rights protected by law.

Australia is a group of states run by totalitarian socialist regimes, where drivers have no rights.

Jammers are banned in NSW, as is every other method of avoiding the revenue cameras. 40,000 people lost their licenses last year through the accumulation of speed camera demerit points. It has nothing to do with safety, only revenue. Why the **** do we all put up with it?

it's to do with transmission rights, nothing to do with anything else

you have to buy the rights to specific wavelengths (eg radio stations pay millions for their chunk of the spectrum)

there are specifically regulated wavelengths that are reserved for (and always have been) for emergency or federal resources such as police, ambos, firefighters, etc

you can still build or buy a radar jammer but trust me they will find you and the fine is hefty (use to be about $2000 and confiscation of equipment ) because you are an unregistered broadcaster in that spectrum, I think you will find they are just as illegal in the US for the same reason

 

what about the IR scramblers? same deal?

 

how are they suppose to work ?

US allocated wavelengths, you will probably find that the govt allocated spectrum covers jammers, nothing wrong with passive devices but transmitting in that spectrum is illegal

 

Very good point Ian, but, most do gooders will simply say don't speed. It would be ok but just 3 kph over the limit and wamo. My cruise control can't stay within that tolerance. I'm not for speeding but there should be a decent tolerance.

You probably haven't heard but we have our new tollway opening soon. Its the safest road in Australia and has 22 cameras. Oh and the government is budgeting, yes I said budgeting to collect $62 million per year. But hey, remember Ian its not about revenue raisng its all about safety. Yeah right. Pull the other one.

 

I've never seen anything wrong with detectors, jammers yes, but detectors are passive and they AID in the safety factor by making people slow down.

If the goody two shoe brigade were really after safety by slowing people down they would allow detectors (almost make them mandatory) and then have randomly powered transmitters at that frequency to raise the alarm on the detector which 'should' slow the driver down

 

3 km/h is ridiculous, especially when the Australian standard for speedometer accuracy is plus or minus 10%.

 

In Sydney, we have stretches of 4 lane arterial road where the speed limit varies from 40 to 70 to 60 to 50 and back again in the space of a few hundred metres (Victoria Rd being just one example). In heavy traffic, avoiding a fine means reducing your concentration on the road.

The new Lane Cove tunnel has a 40kmh downhill 270 degree curve onramp, turning the wheel in my Benz to negotiate the curve obscures my speedo, so I have to go back to 2nd gear and set the cruise to 40 before I enter the ramp. There are two cameras, which have generated record bookings for the RTA. At the same time, the old onramp to the Harbour Bridge, when approaching from the Cahill Expwy, has an equally tight 270 degree left hander with a 70kmh limit!

wasn't there a class action taken over the LC tunnel where a whole bunch of people got their points and money back ??

 

i was always under the impression that they weren't allowed to put cameras on downhill sections where the car could increase speed by itself.

certainly, that's the case here. pays to know that.

 

maybe in VIC but NSW has always had coppers at the bottom of hills, and there are 3 cameras I can think of on the way to Sydney from Brisbane that are at the bottom of hills and on 4 lane divided roads, Brunswick Heads - Little Italy outside Ballina, and heading south on the 4 lane road outside Kempsey .... you have to brake for all of them if on cruise control

 

In the first week of the tunnel opening, they had a temporary 40kmh sign, which was badly positioned and there was no speed camera warning sign outside the tunnel. The fines were cancelled because they would have lost a legal challenge.

Now its all within the law, but outside of any rational logic. 50 or 60kmh would be perfectly safe.

GD and I were towing the rally car back from Port Macquarie on the recent long weekend. At the roundabout south of Newcastle where you turn left onto what becomes the freeway to Sydney, it goes from 100 to 80 on a downhill stretch well back from the roundabout. You have to brake hard as soon as you see the sign. The plods were there with cameras, had about 20 cars pulled over, on a double points weekend. In 25 years of driving up and down that road, I've never seen an accident there.

 

they are there every Xmas and yes, you have to brake then set the cruise control even though it is about 5-600 metres before the roundabout

have you noticed the standard of driving has dropped alarmingly since they became so draconian with the speeds ??

people are so intent on watching the speedo that they forget everything else

and BTW, is that camera still there on the freeway heading north on the steep downhill to the Brooklyn bridge ?

 

theres a large hill near my place 60kmh zone, on a few occasions a copper has been parked @ the bottom pointing his hairdryer up

 

I "love" the one near the Sydney Airport and tunnel/bridge right opposite control tower.

Here's where the limit twice goes down in 10km/h chunks, the traffic is all streaming sedately in the same direction, the road is good quality, and being airport perimeter right to the roadside there is high security fencing all over (so no kiddies going to come out from the side chasing a ball..) and where the limit is something a skateboard could obtain easily.. and RIGHT where EVERYONE must funnel from the whole of the southwest region.... THAT'S where you'll find the invoice generator.. oops "safety camera".

No roadside cops of course if they are SOOO concerned.. just an efficient and expensive computer system printing a steady stream of invoices to follow you up in the next week or so.. thanks very much..

For the record I've never been busted here but I really resent having to artificially slow to a crawl, dropping a gear if need be as car will roll on for long time.. just to meet the ridicuously low threshold for that section before picking up to sane, and quite consitent respectful other-traffic-mindful speed again.

I think so. The whole freeway is a cruise control job. I've never had a problem at 115, but I suspect my speedo is 5% optimistic anyway.

Standard of driving has always been crap in NSW, particularly on freeways. Have you ever seen anyone booked for sitting in the outside lane when not overtaking?

 

On gallahgers road near me there is always a guy parked on the hill. Got my wife's car a few months back.

Not sure who was driving, but she got the 1 point.

All new cars are 4% under. Well aussie built cars anyway. The government found out about that hence reducing the amount as you weren't getting the income.

I bought it up with John Crenan at HSV and asked why the car companies weren't argueing about the safety of the cars etc. really 5k's at 100 is nothing.
