During a smog check, my fans failed to come on and a bunch of coolant came out the overflow tube. I noticed on drive home the fans were not on but if I kept moving the temp would go down to normal. How do I start to trouble shoot fans? Which relay is it? Are there wire connectors under the passenger footwell. I am also having an occasional starter click without turning issue and had an ABS relay issue. Are all these in the same area-footwell? I replaced the ignition switch hoping that was the problem but starter click still there. So where to start with fans- (after I put 12v directly to them) Thanks all.

Please indicate year and model of your car so we can help you out. It could be as simple as a fan switch in the radiator or as complex as a bad fuse/relay board. So, to narrow things some we need that info.

    Check fuse 20
    Check relays g and i.

Then put power to the fan to see if it runs.

    Then check the thermo switch.

With all the other symptoms you list and after doing the above checks you might sniff around the fuse/relay boards and look for issues. I do not have a 328 but I think there are some threads about these boards having issues.

Not on a 89 328. It has the best design of all.
