On the Ferrari 512TR, are the radiator fans suppose to both kick on at the same time? Also has anyone found a good replacement fan? I was looking for less amperage pull and more CFM. I am sure there are some good options out there.

Is this a direct replacement for the 512TR?

I talked to a Spal engineer. He gave me some useful information on this subject. I just wanted to follow up and share.

    VA03-AP6-37A

The AP6 motor was supersedes by the IP68 sealed motor version AP70/LL about 15 years ago. The AP6 motor had water drain holes in the motor can.

The 30102054 fan uses the same VA03 fan shroud, so the bolt pattern will be the same. AP70/LL is the performance match to the AP6 with the sealed motor. Then it uses the same 37A blade. So we were correct, the 30102054-VA03-AP70/LL-37A fan will be the closest current fan version.

Let me know if you have any questions.

    Kind Regards,

    Brent Chuck

+1 for this SPAL. It fits my TR and should be replaced because it draws significantly less current than the original fan. This helps avoiding fuse box issues.

I don't have first hand knowledge about the 512, but they are not expensive. Why don't you give it a try and report back to the forum? Maybe the fans are one of the few things they didn't reengineer ... ;-)

Thanks @silvergts1998 .. to answer your initial question, I am pretty sure both fans operate together, based on the single temp sensor at the bottom of the left side radiator.

Does anyone know how easy it is to replace the fans with the engine in place? How about the radiators? (I have a 2-post lift)

I have some electrical gremlins to work thru, and will presumably need to replace the fuse board and some connectors, and would like to also replace the fans and radiators (seeping slightly) while I'm at it. I also have two rivets holding the passenger side rear strakes that missed their mark when replaced after the car was painted, and I wonder if access to fix those will be easier with the radiator out.

Greg, not positive if the Testarossa has the same layout as your 512TR, but below are pics of my 1986 Testarossa left 7-12 side radiator/fans. Both the left side and right side radiators are exposed upon removing their gravel guards. Also, both the left-side fans and the right-side fans operate together on the Testarossa. EDoug

I put in my competition also in the right radiator a thermoswitch, so only this fan now is running what needs to run. but mostly they turn on and off nearly the same time. good is now if one switch will fail I just can jump the other switch to both fans, nevertheless if it is the right or the left switch

Just summarizing: on a TR you only have take the wheels and fender liners off to swap radiators. Very easy. Access is good.

    Hello,
Changing the fans with the engine in place is easy; however, the radiators are a different story... It’s doable but delicate because they are bulky, and it's easy to snag and puncture them.

Thank you @Grease Donkey and @TestaDDS .. it looks like there's a decent amount of room there, but hard to tell whether maneuvering the relatively large radiator in/out would be troublesome.. sounds like it's possible but requires a little finesse.. thanks!
