Getting ready to install my Nakamichi CD-400. Have to remove the old Alpine unit. I took some photo's of the process. Not pretty but I got it out! Be patient...I'll tell you when I'm done! Pic 1 Remove the screws from under the inserts in the ashtray! Remove the ashtray. Pic 2 Remove the screws from the shift gate, and knob from shifter. Pic 3 Slide down the HVAC panel (be gentle, you can flex out the center tunnel to help free the HVAC). My HVAC was in pretty tight. There are no screws or bolts so just use firm pressure. There's also 2 screws inside at the top of the radio cover that you have to remove. Pic 4 Everythings freed up now. Not done posting yet so don't touch yet! Pic 5,6 To get to the wiring I went thru the passenger side center tunnel. Found the fuse box behind the footplate on the passenger side Pic 7,8 The carpeted bolster comes out with 4 screws. They're buried in the carpet so you may have to feel for them. Now the wiring and the center tunnel is exposed. I loosened up the bolster screws on the drivers side as well. I needed to slide the center console back to free up the radio box as the lower tabs would not clear the console plate very easily Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Pic 9 So now the bolsters are off and I can see into the back of the center console. My least favorite part is the wiring but I'm not done yet. I've got to get the radiobox out of the dash (with the alpine metal receiver jacket attached as the tabs holding it in place are buried deep). Pic 10 Removing the screws from the bottom of the center tunnel storage (my 348 is early 89, later models do not have the storage). I also removed the 2 screws from below where the ashtray was. This frees up the console and I slid it backwards to free up the tabs on the bottom of the radio box so I could get it out. Pic 11 Everythings out now. It's going to be a couple of weeks before I attempt to install the radio as I've limited time to start the install. I'll post pics of the install when I get it done. Outside of time the biggest slowdown I'll have is the wiring. But I'll figure it out! Finished Posting! Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thats what I was thinking............I posted a thread a few weeks back about installing a Nak cd-400........I have spoken to evansp60 about it and he assures me it's easier than it looks.
I've done it on mine. It is easier than it looks.... but here's a word to the wise: BE VERY GENTLE with the plastic surrounds and the HVAC control unit. The plastic surrounds flex/bend a bit, and I'm sure they'd snap like a twig if pressed too hard. The HVAC unit is made of unobtanium. Just be careful. On mine, I'm so freakin' anal-retentive, I took apart my Fuel/Temp gauges too and cleaned the lenses with a high-quality plastic polisher. It's an easy afternoon of work. I prefer to disconnect the battery before I do anything like that -- better safe than sorry. -Daniel
Hey Daniel, Next time you're in the New York area, shoot me an e-mail because the lenses on my guages could use a cleaning as well
tryed to clean my temp guage lenses but didnt help...My stereo install was A LOT easier then that! I just reached around back and separated that nut that holds the back of the radio to that metal strip back there and with some radio shims...just pulled it out....less then 5 mins...I pulled the whole center out later, but that was for the bluetooth handsfree kit I installed, and wiring from the battery to the 2000w amp i put in that drives the 15" Kicker Solobaric that is in the trunk...I have and ADS amp that drives the fronts and rears. Im sure the purists will love to hear that one....Oh yeah...I had to pull out the upper and lower consoles for 2 more reasons... 1. the built in Valentine 1 that is in my 348...The valentine 1 display is built into the radio cover... 2. The carbon fiber upper and lower console I AM STILL WAITING ON FROM VALENCE, USA which has been 5 months now....uh hum..uh hum...valence... I was going to post pics of it all before, have to find my digital camera again...
Funny thing about this post... most of my music controlled via one single wire: from the gas pedal to the engine. Why measure music in dB or Amps or hertz? Try using RPM instead !
I don't disagree with you...the engine noise is the best music from this car. But for those moments when you want/need a distraction....NAK works for me
