I'm having a strange phenomenon vex me as I turn on my 412. When the car has sat and the fancy detachable stereo face is attached the radio sends a blast (and I mean loud) as the car starts. I've also noticed a hum corresponding to the rpms covering over the stereo at 101.9 fm. The latter is kind of amusing, but the former is scaring the hell out of me, the valet, passengers, small children and livestock. Any thoughts.

Your radio is posessed. Stay far away from 101.9, thats one of those evil stations. On the other hand it could just be a bad ignition condensor, or your radio is ready to go tits up. They do that ya know. :)

The amplifier is probalby one of the older ones that don't have the 'quiet' type of startup. The engine noise should be coming from power wires being run parallel to unshielded signal wires. Sounds like (pun) time to put some nice new audio into that car.

Possessed I believe. It was owned by your quintessential Texas billionaire before me. He put in what had to be the fanciest stereo available. If you hit the right button the face opens up and rolls forward to expose the slot for a CD. It's a least ten and likely fifteen years old. Pretty cool for its day. It makes the same blasting spark if you reattach the face plate while the car is running. I suppose I could replace it, but I kind of like the thing. I could take it to a car audio place, but I fear the salivating wrench monkeys.

It sounds like to me that a capacitor in the unit's power supply is leaking.

It probably can be repaired by the right person. We had a repair person that could fix anything until he smoked himself to death.

The noise (hum) may be related to that failing capacitor. Also possble that your alternator is now producing an audible whine in the same frequency band as the station you mentioned. A noise suppressor would help with that.

A 1.0 Mh inductor with at least 20 gauge wire wired in series with the + lead to the radio will cure the whine.

The "hum" is from the alternator, doesn't mean there is anything wrong with it. The "pop" is the amp turning on. This could be from the "turn on" wire to the amp being wrong. Please PM me with a list of what is in the car and I will try to help you. It could be as simple as the amp not having a good ground, or as bad as rewiring and replacing equipment.
