Is anyone here a Radiology Tech ? Or know one ?

I'm thinking of entering the program, (kind of a mid-life career move) I love photography and have also thought that MRI, CT Scans, and X-ray tech was fascinating. There is a local hospital program that is having their intro next week that I'm attending. I was hoping someone here could help fill me in on it.

I know a couple of radiology techs and they make good coin indeed for the 4 years of university they had. I sold a car to a guy who got a $40,000 cheque just to moving to a place that has a slow economy {a lot of people are moving away, first and foremost medical professionals}. Also check your local hospitals, from what I hear there's a shortage of techs in Eastern Canada, it may be a country or continental wide issue like the nursing shortage.

You wouldn't have to spend much time learning the trade, there may be courses that you can cram into a 2 year stretch and if there is a shortage, there's no way it will be filled in two or four years.

Perry- I'll do my best to explain what I can. Being a mid-life move, the healthcare field is not going to stop anytime soon. The pros are if you are an established tech, then you can most likely find a job anywhere in any city- permanent, temp, contract and so on.

The radiology field is quickly moving into a fully digitized environment, slowly but surely films are becoming obsolete and being used by older, smaller establishment. If you have any computer or technical know how you might want to also focus on a combined rad. tech and try to get either into this area. The systems are called PACS , and is basically digital imaging in a nutshell. You get in here while also being a tech. you can have a pretty stable career. It will take a while, as most are brought up within and or moved over from the IT/IS Field.

Depending on how far you want to take it you can and do have time to make it happen. Keep in mind though , you will be fighting with alot of veterans in the field, and young guns/upstarts hungry to move into the technical side as well..

I am not a Radiologic Technologist, but I married one. :)

My wife has been a tech for almost 15 years. It's a pretty good field to get into, best is one of the specialties you mention, CT or MRI, or Nuclear Medicine. You definitely want to do one of the specialties rather than general X-Ray. Radiation Therapy is also an area that you can get into. Salary scale is Nuc Med at the top, then CT or MRT, then Ultrasound, then Mammo, then General X-Ray.

There's a lot of info at http://www.asrt.org. If you have any specific questions feel free to PM and I'll have my wife answer.

I work at an outpatient radiology center, so if you have any specific questions just ask. I'm not a tech, but work with about 75 of them plus 20 Radiologists.

We do MRI, CT, Xray, Ultrasound, Mammograms, PET, etc etc. Plus a lot of pain management stuff (epidural injections, arthrocentesis's, vertebroplasty's, etc).

So you you guys consider it a good field,
    what interest me is.......

Decent pay, I don't care about breaking the bank anymore, but I don't want 10.00/hr either.

Mobile, can get a job abywhere.

Tech/imaging, I love photography, computers, and technology

M-f with no shift, (like at imaging centers)

    Growing field,

    Short program, (24 months)

    No blood and guts
