Well, be gentle, I am a newbie to F1, only following the sport for the last 4 years. My main observation, no matter how hard they try to change things to *allow* for more over taking, it just doesn't happen. Thus, to me the far more exciting races happen in the rain or damp conditions. Unless you have a mechanical failure or the lolipop guy lets you go when he shouldn't, there just isn't any excitement to the races for me. Don't get me wrong the start is awesome, but then its over, race done. Maybe I just don't get *it* and I still love it, just wish there was more chances for overtaking and passing in the sport. More competition. So, be gentle.
Dry. It actually shows who is quicker and is less of a circus (case in point Button actually won two races this year)
I love to watch it FOR THE CIRCUS! Nothing better than rain at Monza - just love the mess at the first chicane I know I'm evil.... but hey - you asked. Jedi
I love racing in the rain and watching wet races. Rain changes everything and you need to be on the top of your game. Here is a race I did in the rain a a couple of years ago. http://www.youtube.com/patricko111#p/u/7/wHeagUuBiDo
I prefer 100% rain races. Races that start dry and end wet tend to be highly random and not representative of skill (Button, etc).
Yeah true...I guess a straight up rain race would be better than dry, I just dislike the changing conditions ones when more luck than skill is involved IMO...
Definitely rain, or reverse grids Rain because, it separates boys from men, and it spices up everything instantly. Checkout youtube, some great wet races from Senna, Schumacher, and most recently, Hamilton.
agreed for those exact reasons. although i will say there are certain tracks where i wish it would rain to lively things up a bit (i.e. hungary) but generally i like dry races where the best man, not the luckiest, can win.
That was fun while it lasted, thanks for posting . F1 or lesser, there is nothing better than sporadic showers for 75%- 85% of the race, (keeps em guessing) but 100% precip is a decent runner-up .
I should also add that the TV does not show how bad the rain really is, I am not sure why but you can't see the half of it on TV. On that YouTube video I posted it does not look near as bad as it really was. I could not see much at all but enough. I guess what in am saying is that racing in heavy rain is even worse than It looks.
This weekends race was pretty dull. It would've been a lot more exciting if we got rain like they predicted.
If you like passing on the track, I'd guess that you get 50 good passes in a rainy race, compared to maybe 10 in a dry race.
Horses for courses D, Personally I want to see the drivers earn there money throw the freaking lot at them, wind rain snow dry track then suddenly wet, you name it, point is even James May (captainslow) Top Gear, can go fast 258 MPH in a veyron super sport... that leaves F1 cars in its wake. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LO0PgyPWE3o
There is a huge difference between pushing a vehicle for terminal velocity alone on a testing track and RACING against 23 other competitors on a circuit. That's why Land Speed Record holders hardly ever turn up to be good racers, whilst for many F1 drivers, straightline speed is not attractive. One is against the clock, the other against competition.
Rain provides an unpredictability factor and can be very entertaining, but it's more about strategy (which isn't a bad thing) rather than sheer speed in the dry.
The problem with F1 racing in the rain, it further limits the already limited passing in every race. Most of today's circuits do not have sufficient water run-off, so water puddles. I believe rain only proves who is best in the rain, not the best, period. We've seen great drives in mediocre cars by drivers that did well in the rain, but did not have the total package. Rain is an equalizer of sorts, but there is more to racing than that. I prefer racing in the dry, and if it would be controlled at will, a segment of wet weather racing, but finishes in the dry. But since Bernie has not yet figured out how to surprise the field with a sudden rain shower, I would rather watch dry races.
Rain It is what separates the boys from the men. Just look at the truly greats in the rain: Often the multiple WDCs were/are also the rain masters of their time. A few exceptions not withstanding (Alesi being the most prominent one). Recent rainmasters: - Senna - M. Schumacher - Alonso - Hamilton (multiple WDC forthcoming) - Vettel (WDC in the making)
I would prefer rain only if the umbrella girls wear white and lose the umbrellas... Rain and the safety car often results in a mediocre car winning due to luck. Want to make F1 exciting? Quali as it is... Race 1: Start based on quali... Ditch the silly tire regs... Refuel as you want Race 2: Invert the grid Ditch the silly tire regs... Refuel as you want As for safety car... no pitting under safety car. Since the teams only have 1 box, pitting under safety car can never be fair No penalties for engine changes.
