Some have been seen out and about.
As to the choices, it's as if a small boy cut out pix of "Great Cars" and as a man went out and got them.

I prefer original. My favorite view ever was a Type 35 Bugatti on a back road in the south of Morocco, most of its original paint worn away. passing me ,engine at full revs. There is a car to drive and covet.

Ralph's cars do get driven. Maybe not as often if he only had 3 or 4 but it is my understanding they are all kept in running/drivable condition and they are exercised frequently.

    I'd like to believe this.

Is there any documentation to prove this?

The layout of his collection doesn't lend itself to quick spins in the parking lot, ala Simeone Collection.

I have personally witnessed him driving his 300SL Roadster in Connecticut.

I can't prove that every single one gets driven, but it is certainly what I have heard and read from various sources. Below is a photo of Ralph behind the wheel of his F1 LM in Colorado - a car that you could safely estimate is worth $5M, so not far off the figures that most of his other cars would bring.

The article in Vanity Fair that started this thread also includes this quote:

"Unlike the stock in many automotive museums, everything in D.A.D. is kept in perfect operating condition and is driven regularly, which is why the owner of the place maintains the conceit that it is a garage, not an art gallery. A ramp, not a stair, connects the ground floor and the upper level, so that the cars can easily be moved in and out."

It would be pretty simple to have a set of small ramps that allow any of those cars on the display platforms to be driven out in a matter of minutes.

    = = =

    Back to France...

More details on the cars in this display can be found here:

Do not miss that "Listen to the engine" button!

Clearly someone drove them in order to capture all those glorious sounds. :)
