Two friends my sonand I went to the Detroit Auto show last weekend. We satyed at the Ramada Inn in downtown Detroit. It has three stars on EXPEDIA It is the WORST hotel I have ever stayed at.
We arrived late Friday and were told the two rooms with two double beds wahad a paid reservation for were not available. They were going to give us 4 rooms with queen beds instead.
The loby of the hotel looked very elegant but had not had any maintanace in forty years. The marble floor was cracked and had not been mopped or waxed in years, the carpets were soiled and thread bare. There was frost in your breath it was so cold. The other guests looked like they were in a half way house. The doors had not been painted in years and in places the wood could be seen to be worn down from years of exposure. Plaster was falling off the walls.
We went through 14 rooms before we found four that the keys would work in and that were warm enough no to see your breath. The elevators would stop between floors. One of the nonsomking rooms that wewere offered had an ashtry filled with ash and butts! The carpet in one of the rooms was worn to the backing. The entire place smelled of dust sweat old smoke and middle eastern spices.
THe following mornig my son informed me that he had no heat and his window was stuck open. There was an inch of snow on the radiator cover. The "restraunt" is a corner dinner that seemed to have mostly transients in it. No room service.
We asked about changing rooms and the clerk told us they were all full. Iasked to speak to a manager and was told no one was there. We asked about maitance to check the heat. Gone for the weekend, Asked about housekeeping giving us mor blankets, The clerks had no access to blankets.
When we returned from the show we again complained about lack of heat. They offered to let us check out and we would not be charged for a second night. This was tempting but there was a foot of snow on the ground and we had a seven hour drive. Fortunately we still had the card keys for several other rooms and we "borrowed blankets from the other rooms to seal off the leaking windows and to keep warm.
DO NOT STAY AT THIS HOTEL
The auto show was great, my son is already planning next years show.
DO NOT STAY AT THIS HOTEL

Don't stay downtown at all!! Try to find something out in the burbs like sterling heights, troy or somthing like that. 20 minute drive and clean hotels.
Or you can stay in my garage and sleep next to the ferrari.

Ramada = Holiday Inn = Old Cheesey Hotels for the most part. Most Marriott properties are still pretty good (ie Courtyard, Residence Inn, even Fairfield's are newer). Just MHO from a person who spends a lot of time traveling for biz.

Edit: FWIW, here's a couple tricks to get the best rates... always try to call the property directly and never accept the first offer... remember, they're trying to get you into the most expensive rate possible. Ask for their special rate; they come down on the price often. When I call on telcos, I tell the hotel I'm coming in with SBC or Verizon or Qwest, etc and they give me great corporate rates (often 30% less)!!! Note I don't say I'm actually with SBC, Verizon, etc. They may ask for a corporate ID number... just say you don't have it in front of you right now. Sometimes they'll say you need to show identification (like a biz card) when you arrive but I've never once been asked. Tricks from a road warrior (2 Million AAdvantage miles over the years... and lots of Marriott REWARDS points too).

For the last 4 years we have stayed at the Marriott at the RenCenter and it has been very nice. We are there for almost three weeks, so it is practically like living there. You could actually stay there and never have to go outside if you don't want. There are plenty of nice restuarants in RenCenter as well as the people mover that will take you right into Cobo Hall for the show.

You can't always trust a chain to be good. I've stayed at EXCELLENT comfort Inns, and I've stayed at horrendous ones.

The only hotel I actually despised was the Ramada Inn in Indianapolis. The ceilings were low, it hadn't been maintained at all, the floors were uneven and had a dip and an incline when going to the room, the room stunk of cigarette smoke, there was a part of a joint lying on top of the picture frame, there were holes in the ceiling in the bathroom, there was a lot of drunk partyers there on Friday and Saturday, and the owners were Indian and living there, and without being too offensive, the whole place stunk of some sort of spice. I literally felt stifled and sick when I walked in. I got violently ill by my fourth day.

Yea, the Ramada is pretty bad. Then again you could do worse, such as the Book Cadillac. The Super Bowl next year should be interesting.....
