I have already had my roll-over valves & related gas tank rubber replaced (and upgraded w/Fabio’s pump surrounds). Fuel filters replaced more recently along with all spark plugs and ignition wires. Bullet proof right ?!

Rained a TON in LA recently, as folks may have heard. Anyway, my car stayed outside the whole time 24/7 for the 3 days of rain with 1/3 tank or so. A random miss has since appeared and related CEL (after driving 3-4 miles post the storm). Filled up the tank, it ran perfect amd the CEL completely disappeared but just came back…AWESOME !

I hope it goes away. I need somebody to tell me it will go away.

My mechanic says he has already heard from 3 people local with the exact same issue. Just filled up the tank, still missing but this seems to be another Ferrari “wrinkle”. Condensation in the tank. Great.

“Ferrari, where sometimes the wheels will actually leak air.”

It will be ok. It will be ok. It will be ok…I hope.

If it is condensation I am thrilled. I will cover it in the rain
Funny I just posted a poll about keeping your car outside 24/7.

The universe talking to me I hope.

With the rain and flooding you have had Id really be surprised if lots of stations didn't get water in their tanks.

I asked about that exactly and was informed that it COULD have a detrimental effect on hoses and related components. I did use Seafoam on my Ducati.

It could be a problem if the dry gas stayed in the tank for weeks or months. I would put it in and then drive the tank to almost empty.

No issue when starting and driving when started cold this morning. I parked it, ran some errands and when I started it back up (hot obviously) it was back to running rough/missing. Seems that when I start it or drive it hot, it exhibits the issue. Does that box with condensation ? Maybe once it is in “closed loop” mode all bets are off.
    Same thing happened yesterday.

I am about to order a pump and purge the gas…recommendations ?

Yeah. Just dump some injector cleaner (doesn't really matter which one) in your gas tank and run it hard.

Or have a mechanic drain the fuel tank if you're really worried.

    But don't worry.

Contact an aircraft supply house. Water in the fuel in light aircraft is very common. The supply house has some type of alcohol that you pour in the gas tank that suspends the water in the fuel so it just burns with the fuel.

I think it’s Isopropyl Alcohol but not the kind from the drug store.

In the olden days, C2 Corvettes were notorious for condensation water in the gas tanks. We just dumped ethanol in the tanks, and that mixed with the water and burned up with no problems. Not in there long enough to affect rubber parts in the fuel system.

Update. Finally burned up all the bad gas running up and down PCH, filled up with Shell today, drove a few miles. Restarted it and the CEL went off and the car runs like a raped ape again.

    Bad gas.

Now I will be one of those old men advising the youths to not fill up “after it rains” here in CA because you can “get bad gas !” Sounds like an old Dads tale or something hahaha. As an aside, we are stuck with 91 here now but my mechanic told me he used to be able to get 93 octane at the airport once upon a time here in LA. !

Be careful using AVgas; last I knew it was still leaded and it'll poison your cats.

As an alternative, find a place that sells VP Racing Fuels and add a few gallons of their HP101 to an existing tank of that 91. Their HP101 is a true 101 octane unleaded fuel. Warning: it'll be expensive!

Good thinking, I just found a VP Racing Fuels less than 2 miles away on Hollywood and Highland and will head there tomorrow - for sure.

How many gallons do you suggest I add to a (nearly) full tank ?

*edit* so fuel is linear so (101+91)/2= 96 octane. So the ratio should be close to 5 to 1 to achieve 92.6 octane.

30 gallon tank = Add 5 gallons to and almost full tank.

Oh darn.... you have to drive more to make room!

One bonus to terrible fuel mileage, it doesnt take long.

For you geeks that want to know how much 101 to put in to achieve a certain octane for the mix, here's the formula:

    ((lowoct)(gals) + (hioct)(gals))/(total gals)

Should be fairly explanatory but here's an example assuming a 20 gal tank:

    ((91)(15) + (101)(5))/20 = ((1365) + (505))/20 = 1870/20 = 93.5

93 octane at the pumps here in Tennessee. Kind of a long trip from California, though.

Added 101 and filled the balance of the tank with 91 (5:1). CEL even disappeared on the way home. No issues whatsoever when I start it cold, even after driving for 100 miles in all types of traffic.

As soon as I shut it off and restart it…..BANG same rough running and missing every time and CEL. Does not sound like bad gas anymore. Maybe an 02 sensor but they are all new and should work in closed loop.

Issue still persists yet only when it starts hot.

Throwing the flag and scheduled an appointment at Fast Cars. Dammit.

There’s a Chevron station in Van Nuys, CA that sells 100 octane fuel. Do a Google search for 100 Octane Race Fuel and it will come up. It’s a couple blocks away from Van Nuys airport. I just bought 15 gallons there for my track car. It’s $10 a gallon.

I did, I actually found another semi-local spot in LA. I added the 101 last week, hoping it would help. It was $14 per gallon. Still misses — only when I start it hot.

Had all the plugs replaced, checked vacuum, replaced the 4 check valves and just recently did all new plug wires too. Turned out to be two injectors that worked fine when cold and when bench tested but on the car (when hot) were failing. Found one OEM $900 and one rebuilt ($450). Problem solved.

MSW should figure out an injector solution, it is confusing as all hell to find the right ones and OEM is $$$$
