While I posted the screen shots of the service orders in another thread, I have a 2019 Velar with 105k miles on it, still in showroom condition, but it now has a code "problem in gear box" or something similar to that. The transmission works fine and the dealer test drove and and reported no problems other than the fault code.

The dealer wanted $11k to "try" to fix it.

Oddly enough, the error occurred 1 day after spending $3k on service (rear brakes and oil change).

My question is, has anyone run into this fault code, or any transmission problem and had it repaired with success?

While the value of the car isn't great, it is a great car and while we probably would not buy another Velar, replacement with another like for like vehicle would be $60-$85k (MB, Lexus, RR Sport).

I've ordered an OOBE reader to check the codes and see if I can clear the fault. Not driving it until I find out more. Wife is using my RR Sport in the meantime. If I can't clear it my next step is to take it to an independent transmission shop.

I've done hours of google searches and hit some Range Rover forums but could not find much.

    Thanks in advance!

No actual experience but google results seem to indicate this is commonish type fault, see info below. An auto electrician or independent mechanic familiar with the velar maybe more effective than a dealer. Also looks like some diy options for you to try as well, I would check to see if anything obvious was disturbed during the service around the switch etc…

The P0850-29 error code on a Land Rover Velar indicates a problem with the park/neutral switch input circuit. Specifically, the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) isn't receiving the correct signal from the park/neutral position (PNP) switch. This can cause issues like the engine failing to start or the transmission not shifting correctly.
    Possible causes:
    • Faulty Park/Neutral Switch: The switch itself could be malfunctioning, sending incorrect signals.
    • Wiring or Connector Issues: Problems with the wiring harness or connectors leading to the switch can cause signal disruptions.
    • Corrosion: Corrosion on the switch or connectors can increase electrical resistance, affecting the signal.
    • Misalignment: The switch might be misaligned, preventing proper contact and signal transmission.
    • Grounding Issues: Problems with the grounding of the circuit can also lead to errors.
    • Software Issues: In some cases, a software glitch in the PCM or a need for a software update could be the cause.

    • Troubleshooting steps:
      1. 1. OBD-II Scanner:
Use an OBD-II scanner to confirm the code and clear it if it's a temporary fault.
      2. 2. Visual Inspection:
Check the PNP switch, wiring, and connectors for any signs of damage, corrosion, or loose connections.
      3. 3. Battery and Ground:
Inspect the battery terminals, connections, and ground straps for corrosion or looseness.
      4. 4. Sensor Readings:
If the visual inspection doesn't reveal anything, use a scan tool to check the voltage and signal readings from the PNP switch, comparing them to the manufacturer's specifications.
      5. 5. Consult a Mechanic:
If the issue persists, consult a qualified Land Rover technician for further diagnosis and repair.
