Like many of you out there, I am always scanning ebay looking for Ferrari parts. About 6 or 7 years ago, you could find some pretty good deals if you shopped around. But it seems that everybody has "got smart" now...and finding a good deal, or even a fair deal, is nearly impossible. I often check out vendors selling used parts, and there are several that I have dealt with who are fair and have good service. But there is one place in particular that seems to have their head in the wrong place - to put it gently, as evidenced by this auction:

    What are these guys smoking...???
    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Ferrari-512TR-Deck-Lid-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem1bf6439164QQitemZ120095740260QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

Then there are VERY GOOD vendors like these guys...
    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Ferrari-512-TR-engine-deck-lid-cover-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem1bff6a79c5QQitemZ120249285061QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

I have tried to deal with the first vendor, offering a fair price for an item...only to be told to go pound sand. How do they stay in business?

Hopefully I don't offend anyone who may have some affiliation with the first vendor...

I would say $5500 for a dented, scratched used lid does sound a bit outrageous.

But, it's always comes down to "buyer beware" and the free market to create the real price of goods.

Wow, that first one left me stunned.
It's not like it's for a vintage model where this is the only one in the world so it's worth spending weeks to fix a component. If I needed one, I'd give $500 for that. Of course, I know I'm cheap, so I recognize that means it's worth about $1000.

I think the op is aware of this buyer beware policy, but that is what he is disgusted by. It is sickening people work this way in the world. Unfortunately, this is nothing compared with the evil that can be seen in action today.

You must be joking. It says "make an offer", which I have done on multiple occasions with good results. They are hoping some rich sucker will pay their asking price, but it very rarely happens. On some items, an order of magnitude lower offer will be accepted.

Why is it sickening? If someone is willing to pay you for something you have, why not take it?

If everyone agrees the price is outrageous, it's not going to sell and he's just wasting his time. It just seems like the first guy is either waiting for a sucker or is willing to wait a long time before selling it. That's his choice and also any potential buyer who may be interested.

It's only too expensive if you can find it elsewhere for less. It's call capitalism...you should have read about it in school,

I would never do business with these guys again (specialized_italian_recycling). I bought a new Ferrari part from them via ebay a couple of months ago but they never sent it. Kept my money for over a month and kept claiming they were waiting for it to come from their "warehouse" "the warehouse made a mistake etc. Total B.S. How do you sell a part that you don't even have possession of and apparently cannot get possession of? Got my money back in the end but what a fiasco. Bums as far as I'm concerned.

Having said that, anybody can ask what they want for a part. In fact I think the asking price along with their lowfeedback percentage (was around 60% not long ago) are good indicators for the "average Joe" that you don't want to do business with them. It's a good tip-off, if you will.

I think they listed the factory price for a new one and are looking at just below 50% of that. If it was clean they'd probably start around 75%. Not abnormal numbers for standard asking prices at name brand wreckers. Better options available in this case? Yes. We can ask what we want for anything we sell and the market will speak. Also we must keep in mind these are Ferraris, limited production, etc. If we complain about parts prices it's because we are not the initially intended owners of these vehicles. And I fit into that group. If they were cheap to fix they would be a lot more expensive to purchase.

+1, I always thought S.I.R ebay listings are a bit snarky, and would never buy anything from them, but surprisingly, a friend of mine has bought a number of items from them using the "make offer" option and they accept....he apparently got the goods each time, and was happy.

+1 on crazy pricing on parts. I've been looking for a polish aluminum fuel filler cap for a while now. They want $90 for it?

    look at the feedback.

78% positive on over 400 transactions should tell you all you need to know. He's not a great seller by any standard.

At the same time, the buyers set the market price. Sooner or later, someone will be desperate enough to buy at that price, until then, he can simply continue to re-list it on ebay at no additional cost to him.

A win for the seller, for sure.

You really believe they would accept an offer at $550?

I've seen those ads from Specialized, I can't imagine how they ever sell anything at those "rock star" prices.

That beat-up deck lid is probably not worth $550 if you have to pay retail labor to have someone beat it straight again and fit it without using a gallon of Bondo.

Assuming that they have an entire wrecked 512 TR it looks like they're trying to get all their money back on the first couple of parts.

Man, that deck lid is in terrible shape! How much worse condition could a potential buyer's lid be in to make them want that one --- at any price? It will take 5K in body work just to get that thing into shape!

I think my deck lid (if I had a 512) would have to actually be "missing" to cause me to take even a second look at that Ruffles potato chip.

Sometimes, the only rational way to post a price on a used F-car item is to research the vendors. As an example, I have a 328 used and working heater blowing system (blowers through ducts) listed here for $1000US, which, to me, seems ridiculously high, but replacement is well over twice that (and that's with Rutlands, who is generally competitively-priced). For used stuff off my 328, I take the lowest reputable vendor's price and half it if the item is in excellent condition and go lower as condition diminishes. Usually, I entertain offers, but within the reasonable ballpark. Apparently, not all F-car parts are easily cross-referenced for cheaper options.

BTW for a TR deck lid, 2-3K is a great price, if it has minimal imperfections (that ebay one for 5K is ridiculous...should be free to a good home unless there is a history lesson associated with it). Try making/repairing one yourself. I posted my successful effort at repairing a corner crash on my 328 (search RobzWorkz #1): if I were to purchase used body panels, I would have spent about 3K; new about 4-6K, depending on vendor; the repair would have totaled over 12K for a pro to do; I learned and repaired for <1K, including tools. Makes me happy, but was a serious amount of work.

I do agree that the seller has questionable practices with a feedback rating <90% (mine's 100%). The FerrParts price would be marginal...I would consider about $2500 shipped.

My experience (in only my 308 Ownership)..is that parts are rapidly going up, due to rarity and availability..

As an example, an FChatter kindly sold an unneeded stock hood for less than $500. At the time TRutlands was quoting $1,100. for the same part, "if we had one".......

That's one reason these engineless 'rollers" are going up in value, one could easily pay for itself if you hit something hard.

The insurance companies are on to this too, the reason so many 'small hits' result in total loss. They knwo what cutting into one of the modern cars costs......a lot!

I am only about 60 miles from SIR. I have driven by and I bet few of you know just how big an operation they are. I got news for you, they didn't get that big by NOT selling parts because they priced themselves out of the market. They move parts, lots of them.

I agree with the idea that if they can sell it, good for them. Obviously, if you are savvy, you will search the best deal.
